Hello Dolly

My highschool is doing Hello Dolly next year, and all I've heard about it is that it's about a matchmaker who eventually gets married herself. But can someone give me the singing ranges and personalities of the different characters?

*Dolly Levi: mezzo soprano (low G- high G#)
widow who spends her time acting as a nosy matchmaker... through the show she tries to find Horace a wife, but really she wants to be his wife.. sarcastic, head strong, independent

*Horace Vandergelder: Baritone (low B to C)
half a millionare who hires Dolly to find a wife for him.. stuborn

*Cornelius Hackl: Baritone (low B flat to high F)
works for Mr. Vandergelder in his hay/feed store..he longs for adventure/excitement, goofy

*Irene Molloy: Mezzo soprano (low A to E)
runs a hat shop in NYC... one of the women Dolly sets Horace up with, but because of certain events brought into motion by Dolly a marriage between the two does not occur.. she later falls in love with Cornelius.

*Minnie Fay: Mezzo soprano (low D# to A)
Irene's assissant.. her character is kind of flighty.. falls in love with Barnaby

*Barnaby Tucker: Baritone (G to E)
works for Mr. Vandergelder.. shy/quiet type

*Ermengarde: vocal range doesn't matter
Mr. Vandergelder's niece.. wants to marry Ambrose.. emotional/over dramatic character

*Ambrose Kemper: Tenor (E to high G#)
artist, in love with Ermengarde.. head strong

*Gussie Granger: vocal range doesn't matter
another women Dolly sets Horace up with.. very animated, rude, funny because the whole date is an act she is putting on

*Rudolph Reisenweber: Bass
head waiter

I hope this helps a little.. I absolutely LOVE this show! I have always wanted to play Dolly, but so far I haven't had the opportunity. Good Luck!I'm totally jealous...

Ah...thankyou!
And I thought no-one would reply!
I'm actaully a little nervous. I'm not used
to having a silly acting role, like if I got Gussie Granger...
gack. I'm really hoping for a role I'm comfortable in.
Have a nice day!

not sure where those breakdowns come from but:

Dolly is a very low alto. The Title song usually bottoms out most singers.

Ambrose and Ermangarde are dance roles.

Mrs Molloy should be a lovely lilting soprano - the opposite of dolly

Minnie Fay is a giggling ditz - usually done w/ a silly character voice.

Hello, Dolly! is a great show, and now that I think about it, a role that would be perfect for you, Chev.
