Hello, Dolly with Beth McVey!!Okay, so I will be out of town I realized for high school musical auditions unless I talk to the president whom I know, and see if I can try out early.
But regardless, I've finally decided maybe I should try out for Hello, Dolly. Beth McVey is starring as Dolly and so to even make a minor part in the play would be fine just because hell, to say you've been in a musical with Beth McVey!?!?!? holy crap that's huge.
BUT, I've never seen Hello, Dolly... I've read up on it of course... but which part should I go for?? Minnie or Ermengarde? And what should I sing? As far as other girls fitting the roles, my best friend Brittany (together we're brittany squared) is pretty much my twin and she'll be trying out (it would be perfect if we both were minnie & ermengarde) and I'll bet she'll get one of them... The other two girls I can think of that could possibly be trying out (I haven't heard that they're trying out) are good, the one is annoying and doesnt have a strong upper register at all (I KNOW I sing better than her) but is blonde and pretty, and the other girl is a brunette and is really good but is a freaking giant.
So, I'm hoping that Brittany & I will have a better chance... plus Brittany is really close with the guy who will be directing and I just met him and have gotten to talk with him a bit (yay). He'll be at our cabaret tonight along with Beth McVey so both I will definitely have to impress.
It's going to be a SUPER small cast because, well... Beth is in it, and the director wants people who really know what they're doing... he's keeping the townspeople/waiters at a minimum... I think he said 8 couples.
But anyway I'm really excited, and ANY help with which part I should go for, song choice, extra info, etc. would be GREATLY appreciated. I love you all!

Ha! I loved reading this cuz it's exactly what I do - I try to think who's gonna be at the audition and what advantages or disadvantages they have over me! But I get screwed every time. Random people show up I didn't count on... the directors had something different in mind that I didn't anticipate... etc etc etc so don't think too much about trying to guess ahead of time, yknow?
ANYWAY, i've been looking at a whole bunch of jerry herman stuff lately (he did do hello dolly right? i might be having a brain fart today) cuz I wanna add a song of his to my rep, so I'll let you know what I find that looks good.
But another reason why I tell you not to think too much about trying to think who's gonna be there and what advantages and disadvantages you might have is cuz you NEVER know what the CDs are thinking. Maybe it's cuz I've been doing this too much lately and it's gotten me in a little trouble, but it's really great if you just go in there and show em who BRITTANY is, not who she is when she's acting. They wanna see what they have to work with, what YOU are gonna bring to a role that NO ONE ELSE will. So I'm starting to turn away from the idea that you need to really gear your audition toward the character you want, and make showing WHO YOU ARE a priority.

Ahh you have a point miss. I won't stress it too much... yeah I've been looking at Jerry Herman stuff too!
I still cannot decide. The only thing I like so far out of searching and searching is Perfectly Marvelous from Cabaret... but I'd rather do something with higher range actually... but still something cute like that.
Any advice to the characters of Ermengarde & Minnie? What are they like? I can't find any decent character synopsis pages on either anywhere. Do you know any suitable songs for trying out for either one?

Ermengarde is a very small role.
She basically just whines and cries.
That's it.
Minnie is a fairly large role.
She's kind of goofy, and in everything I've seen, is a stereotypical ditzy blonde.
Irene is a more serious Ingenue
Then Dolly.. is.. well.. obv.

Hmm, dang, i was hoping ermengarde was a decent role too. Blahhh... I hope the annoying blonde that I can sing better than, doesnt try out. And... do you know of there being brunette minnies? Ugh, I look fine in blonde hair EXCEPT for my BLACK eyebrows, hahahaha....

While Ermengarde is a smaller role, the crying makes her stand out. And she does have somewhere around 10 lines. She also does a bit of a polka dance with Ambrose during the Harmonia Gardens scene.

Blah, I think I'd prefer Minnie then...
but I can't find a song that will fit her type of character.

Ermengarde is a dance role.
Mrs Molloy, being a widow, can hardly be considered an ingenue.

If you are young you have the best chance at getting Minnie or Ermengarde. Ermengarde is a very small part- 5 lines or so, but she's funny and stands out. Minnie is not a lead, but she is a definitely a major role and a great part for comedic acting. When I was 17, I played Minnie and had an absolute blast!
