I assume this is from "We Beseech Thee", yet I've never seen it used in a production of Godspell (the banner, not the song). Can anyone tell me a bit about how the banner was used in the OOB production.

The banners in the photo as well as two other hear us flags were used in the original choreoraphy whenever they sang the line we bessech thee - HEAR US! they would whip the signs out. The original choregraphy can be see on the parables of Godspell/Filming of Godspell video tape. The hour long tape runs about $60 and can be ordered online from Facets Video in Chicago.

Tom- I'm guessing you own this tape or did at one point in time...you say it runs an hour..the tape on the cite you provided is listed at 28 minutes. I'd rather take your guess of an hour at that price...but do you know which it is?

I have the video and I bought when I was doing grad work in Chicago. To be honest, it is expensive for an hour long tape, but being a fanatic I could not resist.

The video is actually two 28 minute episodes of the old CBS tv show called Camera Three. The show ran on Saturday mornings and was a show interested in current events. The video has a 1971 episode showing songs and parables from the play (featuring original cast member Joanne Jonas) and a 1973 episode showing the making of the film. Together they run about an hour.

It is interesting to see the original blocking for some of the numbers. The biggest turn-off is the actor playing Jesus(Ryan Hilliard). He isn't very good. He overplays the role to the point of being "sugary". He was the actor panned in the life magazine article about Godspell . I was told by a cast member from that time that the actor was "Let go" very quickly.

first off I have no idea how you know so much, but thank you you are a valuable resource for all godspellites out there. Now then- would you consider the tape a worth while investment?

and do you know for sure that the tape on the link you provided had both 28 minute episodes on it?
