I found this online... it's a bootleg video of the OBC of Rent.

The quality is so-so but overall it's pretty good. I'm watching it right now.

That was awesome. Despite the fact that it was illegal to film, I feel strangely grateful to whomever filmed it. It is historically significant in theater history. That was probably...1996? These performaces are essentially thrown away as each show ends and to have a permanent record of a show (even if it is crude) allows us see how that amazing original cast did the show. I think the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization does keep historical recordings of shows but it's not as if just anyone can look at them. On that tape, Idina Menzel's "Over the Moon" is much better than her performance in the movie.

I wish they would (legally) film more performances because it really doesn't diminish my desire to see the show live. And if on some night, the cast really clicks and does an outstanding show, we'd be able to see it and actors can study it.

I wish they could have legally video-taped it... and there should be a way that people can do it. I mean, the performances are amazing - especially Adam Pascal's... considering he wasn't really an actor. There's this one song where his voice cracks a little... I think it's during "Another Day".

I never got to see the original cast on Broadway, so watching that was a really good experience for me.

And it's also helped me decide that my favorite character is Mark. I think I've always been partial to his character, but watching Anthony Rapp dancing around and going crazy with his hands is just enough reason to favor Mark.

I agree. I mean, I found this other video for the show, with the 2003 Broadway cast... but it wasn't right. I didn't like the guy playing Mark. I was trying so hard not to compare him to Anthony Rapp... but parts of the show he seemed... I don't know... not as "Mark"-like as he should've been. During the '"La Vie Boheme" part, he was great... but once again, Anthony freakin' owned that scene. You just can't beat his dancing around.

in the 2003 vid, Mark Caplan pushes his glasses up his nose with his thumb every thirty seconds. It was annoying at first, but I grew to really like it. it was cute.

I've only ever seen Anthony's version of Mark (gotta love the wonder of film), so I have no basis for comparison, but I really liked his Mark. As someone pointed out, it just feels right.
