Has anyone ever heard of adding characters to the show?

Ok... this may sound REALLY stupid.
But at my school this year... we did into the woods..... and the directors added like fairytale characters... like the 3 bears (I was Mama Bear Smile I was also the only freshman in the show.. and was called bac for Bakers Wife).... and what not.

Are we the first to do that? Cuz that would be rather Wicked haha

Illegal?

we didnt say anything... we were just on stage singing the 2 finales haha

When I did it, we had 4 kids who had never done a show before and weren't very good that were left over. However, we can't do cuts at my school, not for sports or musicals.

So, they were casted as trees. They would move when the scene changed, held up the scrim for granny's house, kept Rapunzel's tower from falling down again and were interactive trees basically. Kinda stupid, but we really couldn't do anything else.

And yes, I have heard of adding other characters to the show. The best one I ever heard was dwarfs that carried the dead offstage. We were going to do that, but we didn't have all 7.

Yeah, it's done a lot actually, especially at schools. Choruses of fairy tale characters usually include three pigs, Hansel and Gretel, Goldilocks, etc.

I don't mind it, provided the costumes aren't hideous. If there must be a chorus though, I'd rather just see a group of peasants or whatnot. The worst thing possible is when they start adding characters from The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and Harry Potter. If it must be done, at least stick with traditional fairy tales!

Oh... I totally agree. We had like.... 3 pigs, 3 bears, Goldilocks, Rumpelstilskin, His Queen, Pinochio, Hansel and Gretel, The Ugly Duckling.

Yeah... it was cute

It was posted on here, actually... I don't remember when or what thread, but it was ages ago. I was horrified when I saw it.

Yes...that's...disturbing...I can't imagine Dumbledore just suddenly appearing at the wedding and singing Ever After...or Snape coming out from behind a tree to sing Children Will Listen...
Baker

I think they just had Harry, Ron, and Hermione. But still.

This is the only way Harry Potter characters should be put on stage:

Whoa...

I'm kind of loving the idea of extra characters from Harry Potter being added. You know, in a satirical way...

In a local community production (I didn't see it, I heard it was terrible) apparantly the director added four kids who would be sitting onstage the whole time. They were supposed to represent the kids the narrator was reading to.

Which would be great, except for the slight fact that I interpret the story (and I think most other people do to) with the narrator as the Baker telling the story to his son.

Yeah, when my middle school did the jr. version of ItW they added a few random characters... I believe they had a girl dressed up as a green fairy-thing ("Tinkerbell"?) and a girl who was supposed to be the princess from "the Princess and the Pea." Fred! Lol. Very Happy

My new school added fairies I think three years ago...I was told but I forgot what.

I did Into the Woods over the summer, and we added in a bunch of characters. For some reason, someone thought it would be a great idea for like 20 8-year-olds to be in the show (?). For the beginning of the show, they were all dancing trees, and for Ever After and Children Will Listen, they all dresses up like Golidilocks, 3 Bears, 3 Little Pigs, etc. They didn't have lines or anything, but it was pretty cute.

lmfao!!! that's so funny!! and they're really good dancers too...

i know a lot of school and community shows like to make the ensemble really big, or add in an ensemble if there wasn't one (YAGMCB). but we don't usually "add characters."
frenchhorngirl

well, when we did oliver we added a character named Ginny to be Bet's friend.

Well, that's certainly something you don't come across everyday. Very Happy

I saw it a few years ago and they added a Litttle Bo Peep and people like that. It worked ok but the they were not in the show very long
Lara

When my new school did it last year, they had random middle schoolers as "elves", which basically just went around, holding up birds for Cinderella and little things like that. It worked pretty well, 'cause there were only, like, four or five of them.

Was this a production of the Jr. Version where this occured? Otherwise, there could be trouble with the Narrator's death in Act II that could only really be avoided by having the giant off the kids too...

I think that the notion is rather pointless. I mean, they'd only be in the finales... the show wasn't written to have an ensemble, and while some shows, like the Secret Garden, can be somewhat changed to account a company, Into the Woods doesn't work well at that, becuase there are only a couple of "full-cast" songs.
