Why would there be someone with a British accent in Rent?

He would be an awesome Fiyero

I doubt we would do it, hes more rock and roll. I love his album!
pish123c

My main problem with Declan is his acting. When I saw him he was just so...meh.

And the accent got in the way of a lot of his songs and dialogue, so lots of things were sloppy and ran together.

I'm picky with my Rogers. He's not as 1 dimmensional as people think, and I think Declan really got who Roger was, he just wasn't that great at performing it.
theg8whiteway

I still love him Smile!

You don't get the point at all. Actors often will use dialects to play foreign characters.

If you're British and want to be Roger, neato sweeto, but work out an American accent.

Like I said above, I'm not a fan of Declan. But to be fair, Roger isn't exactly ethnically specific as far as an accent/skin color, etc.
Eponine93

It was an attempt at humor. I try.

Seriously, though, since when is Roger British? Does he have a hidden past or something? Last I checked, characters from New York generally don't have British accents. The fact that whatever-his-name can't do an American accent shows a lack of acting skill.

Neato sweeto?

But he is American, and a poor grunge rocker living in New York

so...
A). He is American and should be played that way
B). He is white (unless you can look back and find a grunge rocker who wasn't)

yeah, it was a catchphrase we used in fifth grade, I felt it was time for a revival

Aw, I got your joke.

Like I said, Roger is one of the few characters in the show who ISN'T ethnically specific.

Just because it is set in NYC dosen't mean he wouldnt have an accent. Isn't it the great melting pot of cultures, after all? And you said it yourself...he has a sort of hidden past. We never really find out where Roger is from, his family, etc.

Dosen't mean I liked Declans accent, because like I said, it was sloppy at points, but just making a point.

But where in the show does it matter if he is American or not, or even clarify?

And just because Roger has always been played by a white guy dosen't mean it is set in stone. Plus theres the fact that not every unsucesfull grunge rocker was white. I'm sure it wasn't just white people who liked grunge, lol.

I know where you're coming from, but for that character I don't think it matters.

Now, a white Angel or white Mimi I would protest to, but not Roger.

What would be wrong with a white angel?

or mimi?

Twisted Evil stick that in your teacup and sip it, properly Twisted Evil
pish123c

The difference is that Mimi and Angels races are actually referenced.

Out tonight: "...When the Spanish babies cry..."
And as far as Angel, he speaks a small portion of Spanish I believe to Mark at one point, plus, I think Angel in Spanish means something like "boy" or something along those lines (not 100% sure though) and since he's a drag queen, it's a neat little thing.

The 14th or 15th I think.

Speaking as a token Brit, I think the accents and backgrounds of the characters should be left well alone. I'm dreading the upcoming experiment on RENT that's going to hit us in London.
What Is This Feeling?

I might be seeing Rent on the Saturday matinee at 2Surprisedo. So, will I be seeing Tamayra Gray?

Now EVERY character with an accent is something I'd have a problem with.

i saw both in detroit back in march and i loved them both. Im not a die-hard anthony rapp fan - though Im not against him - and preferred harley most of the show.

i loved declan as well - i dont think his british accent messed up the role at all. my best friend said his Glory almost made her cry. Smile

Where on the OBCR is there ever even faintly a New York accent?
Mazz

Er... everywhere? Even if you don't think they're specific enough to be New York, they all at the very least have American accents.
pish123c

Yeah, but America, ESPECIALLY New York is a melting pot of so many cultures. Rogers ethnic/cultural background is never really significant or even made clear, so it wouldn't be THAT unrealistic if he had an accent of sorts.

How comes everytime I saw it there was an Asian girl doing the voice of his mom. Could he possibly be half Asian?Laughing

Tamyra Gray is playing Mimi and the last time I looked she's black. She still sings the same lines though. Feels to damn much like home when the Spanish babies cry doesn't have to mean that she's Spanish.

Edited to say that during the last voice mail Mimi's mom is speaking in Spanish to her. And everytime I've seen her she's being played by a black woman. LoL
mastachen

On the international tour, I saw an Asian (Karen Mok) play Mimi. She wasn't any good, but still... she wasn't the traditional Spanish or black.

Don't quote knowledge of the movie as canon. I think it's generally accepted by hardcore RENTheads that it's not.
Eponine93

The character's name is Mimi Marquez. Obviously, she's Jewish.

Color-blind casting has become part of theatre culture. Obviously, it's difficult to find eleven years worth of replacements that can pull of the part of Mimi- or indeed any part in any musical- and have the same ethnicity. Many of the stars in the current cast of Les Mis are Asian. It's universally aknowledged the show takes place in France, and that's that. I think the same should be said for Rent- the characters ethnicities and races should be universally adknowledged (by now, most people who see the show have already seen the movie or the stage show previously) and the rest left up to the actor's portrayal and the audience member's imagination.
Mazz

Last Mimi we had was half Indian.
