Re: Hairspray movie
I think I don't care, but do I think you should learn how to spell and punctuate. |
||||||
| IwantheGoldenTicket |
I'm sorry. I can actually spell and puncuate. I sometimes find it easier to just type. I'm sorry if that bothers you. But that's okay that you do not care, I was just throwing the movie out there to see what people thought.
| <3Wilson<3 |
There already is Hairspray the moive, they should leave it at that!
| Holly |
Ugh. The High School Musical kid who looks and sounds like he should be in a boy band. Or didn't they dub over his voice?
| IwantheGoldenTicket |
i agree. although i'd be curious to see how this one turns out. but the old one is classic.
| purplepolkadot |
Yeah, they dubbed alot of his voice for High School Musical. But obviously they arent going to dub his voice for Hairspray, so I guess we are really going to get to see how well he sings. Amanda Bynes? She sings? |
||||||
| IwantheGoldenTicket |
no they didn't dub his voice. he was only dubed for some high notes he couldn't hit. or so i've read.
| <3Wilson<3 |
I heard som unknown 17 year old is playing Tracy, thoughts about that?
| LesWickedPhantom |
I go to camp with some people who know her/have been in musicals with her, and I've only heard good things from them about her. I think she'll do a fine job. and apparently, she was an incredible Ms Lovett in Sweeney Todd in highschool. |
||||||
| cabaretfreak |
I don't want to see the movie now that boy is in the movie. What a tradgy (sp)!
| Holly |
Mrr. I was willing to look on the bright side if they had dubbed him over. No one really seems to be completely certain if they did or didn't though, so maybe he does have a decent voice but they just wanted more pop vocals in High School Musical. Who knows...I'll wait til the movie comes out to see. There are definetly some...interesting (blah)...choices, reading through IMDB. The director has also directed The Pacifier and Cheaper By The Dozen 2. |
||||||
| norayouadora |
I guess since they took a chance on casting an unknown in the lead role, she'll probably be a pretty decent singer/actress (dear lord I hope so). I wish they could have gotten Marissa Jaret Winokur to reprise her role, but there's really no way she could pass for a high school student. Why didn't they ask ME? Lol. I'm really not liking the idea of Haylie Duff or Amanda Bynes, either, but I've never heard Amanda sing so maybe it won't be that bad--I want to try to be optimistic, I guess. John Travolta will be interesting to see. And I do think Queen Latifah is well-suited for the role of Motormouth. I despise Zac Efron. When I was browsing the IMDb page I was reading down the list, thinking "Maybe... Sure... Okay... You'll do..." etc, with each of the actors, and my heart practically stopped when I saw that he's playing Link. I've calmed down a little bit since then, but I just can't stand the idea. |
||||||
| what_the_heck013 |
Because that one isn't/wasn't a musical. This is/will be. Anyways, I am VERY excited about Amanda Bynes, but not excited for that Zack Effron guy. From the bits of High School Musical I've heard, he doesn't support his voice very well... and there's something else wrong with his voice, but I can't pinpoint it. I also think he looks too young. But nevertheless Amanda Bynes is in it so no one cares. |
||||||
| <3Wilson<3 |
Can Amanda Bynes even sing?
| purplepolkadot |
Thats what I was wondering. |
||||||
| norayouadora |
Ugh. Zac Efron! I hate his voice. You're right, he doesn't support it. And he has bad vowels, and it's just not right for Link. Also, if they had to dub him for HSM, why would anyone cast him in another movie musical? I mean, of course it will attract people obsessed with HSM, which is a pretty good move from an economic perspective... But ew. The more I think about it, though, I guess I can imagine it working with Amanda Bynes. She usually plays sort of goofy characters, and she's pretty funny... I think I could see her as Penny. As long as the voice is there, that is. Oh, and I'm glad that Brittany Snow might be Amber; I could definitely see that working. And I like her so much more than Haylie Duff (though I guess I don't really despise either). It's frustrating, though, because we don't know how well she sings. Oh well, I'd still go see the movie even if Hilary Duff was playing Tracy. |
||||||
| purplepolkadot |
Ok, I really like Zac Efron..and it seems like I'm one of the only ones who does on this forum. But oh well.
Maybe its just me trying to be optimistic about this whole deal, but Link and Troy..the guy who Zac played in High School Musical are pretty differant, and they have differant ranges in their voices. Zac was dubbed beacuse he couldnt hit alot of the higher notes in some of the songs. And Links range is lower, so Zac (hopefully) should be able to sing all those nots. But yeah, I do agree Amanda Bynes will probably be good in this, as long as she can sing. I loved Shes the Man (guily pleasure But I guess we just have to wait it out, until the movie comes |
||||||
| norayouadora |
That was partly what made me change my mind. Such an incredibly stupid movie, and yet, I loved it. Lol. So I figure Amanda can't be all that bad. |
||||||
| <3Wilson<3 |
I'm sure Amanda will be great, that is if she can sing.
| IwantheGoldenTicket |
i completely agree. I love zac efron and he was great in high school musical. just because it may have a "corny" story line doesn't mean it's bad. he can sing, he just can't hit higher notes. so what sue him. there are plenty of actors out there who can't. amanda bynes seems like she would be a good singer. i hope so. i hope they don't dub her voice. because that would be upsetting. p.s. i love she's the man too! |
||||||
| MsDivaKate |
Amanda supposedly got her start doing musicals and has had some vocal training. So yes, she can sing. Also don't forget they will be working with vocal coaches throughout the entire film, much like in Chicago and any musical film, so I'm sure it will turn out fine. Though I myself was not happy to hear about Haylie Duff and whats-his-name from High School Musical. |

Re: Hairspray movie
Pardon me, but if you're going to fault others for their grammar, I suggest you check yours as well. "...but DO I think..."...I'm pretty certain you meant "...but I do think..." I'm not sure if it's fun for you to be rude to people, or if you just have a lot of bad days, or maybe it's just the way you are-but I've seen a lot of your posts and many times you just cause problems. Can't we all just be NICE to eachother? Please? |
||||||
| Luc |
Can you please stop talking to yourself?
Only one post in a row is needed, not three. |
||||||
| Ep-Griz-Reno |
I wasn't talking to myself...all three of those were in reply to another. |
||||||
| Luc |
EDIT them. Please! |
||||||
| Ep-Griz-Reno |
From now on I'll put them all in one. =) |
||||||
| what_the_heck013 |
Who cares? She's amazing.
Most actors do. They star in their school musical and bam! They become famous Hollywood actors/actresses. |
||||||
| Ep-Griz-Reno |
Yeah it's suprising how many hollywodd stars started off musically |
||||||
| PAMIE |
I just want to see John Travolta in Drag LOL |
||||||
| Ep-Griz-Reno |
Hahahahahhahahahahahah |
||||||
| purplepolkadot |
oh good.. I'm glad at least one person agrees with me on this. haha. Yeah. Hopefully Amanda Bynes can sing. I think if they went all out finding like 'new people' to be cast in it. They wouldnt make the 'big names' dubbed singing. Beause that kind of ruins the whole point of it being a musical. |
||||||
| norayouadora |
One track mind, perhaps? Lol. |
||||||
| what_the_heck013 |
I have been a huge fan of Amanda Bynes since All That... or whatever it was called. I am SO excited (apparently) that she will be in Hairspray. I admire her because she's not afraid to be goofy and weird, compared to other actresses her age *cough*HilaryDuffLindsayLohanTheOlsenTwins*cough*, who feel that they must always be princesses. |
||||||
| MsDivaKate |
I too have adored Miss Bynes since her All That days. I think its because of the exact reasons you've stated. She's adorable, yet quirky and it doesn't bother her. She's herself and very real. |
||||||
| sadie1208 |
Hairspray movieIt will be interesting to see all the actors in the charaters but I think they should have someone more well know for the role of Tracy although I don't really know who. |
||||||
| i'm_back |
i'm personally excited. and I think they should get Christine Baranski (Mary Sunshine from the movie Chicago) to play Mrs. VonTussle, Amber's mom.
| mtgirl118 |
I have read that they completely dubbed his voice. This was from a High School Musical Collectors Edition magazine that my friend owns because she is obsessed. The magazine was made by Disney. In the facts article they said they completely dubbed Zac's voice. I can't wait to see the movie. I love the musical but I think I'm going to laugh at the movie. The casting is so horrible! I mean, they cast Zac! Ellen |
||||||
| norayouadora |
That's an idea. But I'd be so used to thinking of her as Mary Sunshine, or the woman from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Lol I know she's been in plenty of other movies and TV shows, etc, but I'll probably always associate her with those roles. On the website it says "Michael Pfeiffer" is rumored to be playing Velma. I'm assuming that it's supposed to say Michelle Pfeiffer, unless they've cast some unknown German guy to dress in drag and play Velma... Hopefully not. I think I wouldn't mind Michelle; her voice sounded okay to me in Grease 2 (if that was really her voice), even though the movie is awful. |
||||||
| what_the_heck013 |
I always associate her with Mrs. Lovett. |
||||||

Yeah, well, you WOULD. (Joking, of course |

Dubbing / Michelle
You mean like the way they didn't let those big names sing for themselves in The King and I, My Fair Lady and West Side Story? Ok, ok - I know the trend is to let actors sing for themselves these days. But the poor casting in the POTO film and in the upcoming Sweeney Todd doesn't leave me with much faith....
Yes, that was Pfeiffer's real voice in Grease 2 and last I heard she was in final negotiations to play the role. Later days David |
||||||
| rytoast25 |
besides zac efron(eww) i would see it
| rytoast25 |
im not the only one. |
||||||
| norayouadora |
^^No, you're definitely not. Lots of people dislike Zac Efron. But hopefully if they get someone else to do all of his singing... Um, and acting and dancing and everything else... Maybe it will will be okay! Lol. |
||||||
| BroadwayBaby0202 |
Ok. Well, Hairspray is my favorite musical of all-time and I just think that Queen Latifah is a little young to play Motormouth. Agreed? Also..Zac Efron as Link is going to be awful with his atrocious (sp?) acting skills and dubbed singing voice, in my honest opinion. I didn't even know Amanda Bynes sang... hopefully she can belt because Penny's a definite belter! Oh and John Travolta as Edna??? Ummm bring back Harvey please.
| Luc |
Actually, I didn't like Harvey very much. His voice was hard to understand. In fact, every time I heard his voice, it almost made MY voice sore!
| norayouadora |
Aww, c'mon... Ya gotta love Harvey. Okay, I guess you don't have to, but I sure as heck do. But I dunno, I haven't really decided yet how I feel about Travolta. He might be okay, but he might now. I love Fierstein's voice, but when I saw the show Edna was played with a very rich baritone/bass voice, and I liked that too. Especially on "You're Timeless to Me," it's refreshing to hear the notes. I guess I'll just have to wait until I see the movie to see whether or not I like Travolta in the role. |
||||||
| Luc |
Don't get me wrong - he nailed that role. But sometimes it's really hard to understand him because he sounds like me after I go to a theme park for five days straight, and I don't stop screaming and then I go to perform a Broadway run of Hairspray, only to make an OBCR a few months later!
*huffpuff* |
||||||
| future_glinda<3 |
I am SCARED to see John Travolta as Edna. And I'm sure I'm not the only one!
Also, i had no idea Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow and Michelle Pfeiffer could sing....... Ugh, now I'm maaaad! |
||||||
| norayouadora |
Nah, don't be mad... I was a little upset at first, too, but that was only because of Zac Efron. I notice you didn't say anything about him. Are you a fan? |
||||||
| BroadwayBaby0202 |
I really like that idea! Christine would be perfect for that role. The best Velma I've seen was Susan Anton in Las Vegas. It would be great if they had her play it... |

I don't know how I feel about Zac yet....but I'm SUPER excited for this movie! I think it's going to be great! It has an amazing cast, although I heard a few songs were cut:
Big Doll House Good Morning Balitmore (Reprise) The Madison http://hairspray-movie-musical.blogspot.com/ and I thought I read that It Takes Two is cut.....but that one may be wrong. Offical site:http://www.hairspraymovie.com/ PS: THIS IS MY 100th Post!!!! After 3 years! lol shows how much I come on here still...lol |
||||||
| shakalakababy |
I really don't like hairspray so it's I doubt i'd appreciate the movie. But I don't think it will me good anyways, considering the path most movie musicals have been taking lately. And I HATE zach efron
| allieoop |
Oh my, I'm sooo excited for the movie! By the way, does anyone know what company owns the rights of hairspray?
| aquamarine fishnets girl |
I'm just torn on this whole thing. I love Hairspray the show, and the original movie - actually the show was one of my first big Broadway loves.
I think it was classy of them to get an unknown for Tracy, and most of the grown-ups I'm not too worried about. James Marsden as Corny I'm actually looking forward to; John Travolta ehhhh. As for the teenagers... meh. Zac Efron initially made me cringe, but I'm settling into ambivalence towards him, and for that matter Amanda Bynes. She's not a terrible actress... I just don't know if she can sing. But really, as long as they can sing, I don't mind, and I'll go see it because I feel compelled to see every musical movie... no matter how bad they are... and you never know, because movies do tend to bring more people into liking musicals, which is always good. |
||||||
| me-shellmybelle |
Im excited about the movie because I love an easy cheaper way to see a musical since I live in the middle of nowhere. Ive fallen in love with the music to this show and I LOVE John Travolta. I grew up on his version of Grease. Zac Efron is a cute face but thats not going to seel this movie. Amanda Bynes is adorable but if she cant sing she is going to get some bad reviews. As for casting an unknown as the lead I think it was the smart thing to do. The supporting roles with big names will hopefully help it in the box office but a talented unknown will get the Broadway people into the theater.
| christinadaae |
Exactly. Its not like I can take a RedEye to New York every week. Sure, Chicago is good, but its still expensive, and every has to be carefully planned... blah, blah, blah. I would enjoy seeing Hairspray on broadway, but now I can walk two blocks to go see it. I can get my popcorn, and that warm-fuzzy musical feeling. Of course, I hope its a Dreamgirls feeling and not a Phantom of the Opera feeling. |
||||||
| norayouadora |
LOL, that's a good way of putting it. Also known as a "Chicago" feeling, as opposed to a "Rent" feeling...
|
||||||
| Eponine93 |
OK, I'm in a better boat than most of you because I live near NY but still, I only get to see a few shows a year. What I LOVE about movie adaptations is once they come out on DVD, you have the show in your living room. Even the bad movies adaptations, like Rent. I believe as soon as a show goes off-Broadway they should release a DVD of the taping of the original cast. I, for one, like seeing taped live shows better than movie adaptations. |
||||||
| avalanche14 |
I know a girl who auditioned for this movie-musical and she got a call-back but she wasn't cast as that character =[
| Salome |
Rent wasnt terrible. but it was certainly no Producers let alone a Chicago. |
||||||
| norayouadora |
You liked the movie of The Producers? As in, the one with Uma Thurman? Yikes. I hated it. Nowhere near as bad as Rent or The Phantom of the Opera, but not at all on par with Chicago IMO.
| ajkowalkowski |
Zac Efrom has no talent.
| ajkowalkowski |
I'm also not too sure about Travolta as Edna |
||||||
| Salome |
What was wrong with the Producers film? (except thurman's performance) i mean lane and broderick and beach and bart all recreated their roles. its not as good a film as the original Mostel/Wilder film but its still quite good. |
||||||
| Luc |
Yeah!
But I must say that I didn't at all enjoy Chicago... I think that musicals need to have people randomly singing on the spot, and almost every single song was a fantasy... other than that it wasn't too bad. |
||||||
| candymancan |
I must concur, I hated how whenever there was a song they went back to that stage to sing it, it just bugged me and took away from the actual Musical. I hate when shows are chanbged so much they aren't the same |
||||||
| norayouadora |
That's exactly what was wrong with it... The female lead of the movie and she can't sing or act, or at least not in this role. There were some good performances, as you said, but for me she just ruined the entire movie. |
||||||
| Luc |
Technically, you could call her the female lead because... she's the only female in the story. Her part's not even that big, though. She comes into the story with two scenes to go in Act I, and she doesn't have much to do in Act II, except for "That Face" and everything before Springtime for Hitler, where she has small solos... she may have a small solo in Prisoners, too.... but her part isn't that big.
| i'm_back |
musikal_geek, did you like Uma Thurman? because she is your avatar
| Luc |
I personally loved her.
| Salome |
but she isnt the female lead she is the smallest supporting role in the piece. its not an important enough role to ruin a whole film. |
||||||
| BoundBySound |
I'm not too sure how I feel about the movie.
There are too many pop stars, etc. for my taste but you never know, it could turn out nicely. I'm really excited about John Trevolta as Edna though, that'll be a hoot. I dont know, I just really want to see it so I can decide already haha. |
||||||
| PappyCat |
The trailer looks great! I'm super excited to see it!
| Angel-of-Music* |
why Zac Effron? WHY? if he couldnt sing something from high school musical (possibly the worst musical, if not worst film of all time, ever) what makes anyone think he could sing something from a musical worth watching.
| lovesinging |
Exactly what I thought. |
||||||
| xsophiex |
I think we should all be a bit open minded until the movie comes out. Zac Efron has only been in one movie, which was awfully written and highly obsessed about. He could save himself and get a few fans from this film, he just has to be miraculously better that's all. Let's face it, Hairspray's much better written than HSM. It could really help him. It's either a great career move for him or a gigantic turn for the worse, depending on his performance. I think it'll be great to see Amanda Bynes as Penny. John Travolta and Queen Latifah in my opinion will be just as good as they always are. We know they can both sing and act. I'm not too bothered about the others. I think whoever is Tracy will be great, from what i've seen on the trailer. I can't wait anyway! Dragging all my friends to the movies when it's out. =)

Btw, if anyone's interested, someone just posted a link to a new trailer in the Social Club! |

When is the release date for the UK?
| Luc |
But isn't that kind of the point of musicals? If people actually did break out singing in the middle of the day, then musicals wouldn't be near as cool. |
||||||
| PappyCat |
But a musical isn't ONE thing. I like that Chicago had a different take on the script.
| kitty17794 |
Zac's single came out yesterday for the movie, and it sounds AMAZING. I was shocked by how great his voice really is. (Remember, he didn't sing for HSM...Drew Seeley did.)
| Luc |
I never thought I'd say this, but he was really great! From the little bit on Oprah, he seemed fantastic for the role!
|
||||||
| VivaLaVieBoheme |
I'm fairly happy with the cast they picked for the movie, except John Travolta is just awful! I saw him in the trailer, and everything was wrong, the costume, the voice, the mannerisms, EVERYTHING!
| Maniacbob |
Im actually pretty stoked for this
I cant wait to see Christopher Walken in this Looks like it'll be pretty good Why do all the movies worth watching happen to be so far away? |
||||||
| i'm_back |
i was wondering. because that song "Ladies' Choice" sounds a lot different than "Get cha Head in the Game" and all the other High School Musical songs. |
||||||
| norayouadora |
^That's so weird... If Zac Effron has such an "amazing" voice, I wonder why he had to be dubbed for HSM. I'm not mocking you; I'm truly curious. I just assumed that he couldn't sing because he was dubbed in that movie. I've heard his fangirls say that he had to be dubbed because Troy was a tenor an Zac is actually a baritone or something, but that doesn't make sense because Link's singing gets pretty high at some points. So if he couldn't sing high enough for HSM, how can he sing for Hairspray?
|
||||||
| PappyCat |
I've heard Zac sing the Hairspray stuff from previews and on Oprah and he does a really good job! I'm NOT a HSM fan, nor a Zac fan, but I think he's doing a pretty good job.
He was dubbed for HSM because he didn't have the right vocal type. Personally, I think they should have PICKED someone with the right voice...but dubbing isn't exactly uncommon. Anyway, I was a little iffy about their choice on Zac at first, but I'm opting to trust their decision, especially until I see the movie. |
||||||
| Luc |
Zac Efron wasn't even famous before HSM, so it's kind of hard to believe that there was no one out there who could act as well as him, who fit the voice range. |
