Hairspray - laughing during "Timeless to Me"So, I've heard from a few people that during "Timeless to Me" the actors burst out into laughter, breaking character. It happened when I saw it too. So, my question is... do they do it every night on purpose, or is it a coincidence that all of my friends have seen laughing actors during this scene?
I've got to admit, it was damn funny when it happened, but it just seems odd that they would do it on purpose every night.

Yeah I saw the tour when it came to Baltimore and they did it...
Then I was talking to my friend about it who saw it another night and she said they did it too!
Wasn't it some jew penis joke?

Anyone know if they do it in the London production?

Aww that really sucks. I just thought it was one of those classic "Actors got swept up in the moment" things, but it kind of ruins it if EVERY show gets the laughs. Oh well.

sometimes in pro shows they add a gag that makes it seem like the actors are breaking character, or something happens that you think is a mistake...cuz it makes for a good story and usually the audience eats shiz like that UP. you can tell you friends that you saw this show and the actors totally started laughing! i think its a clever ploy. hah.
the eq. theatre i worked at did lucky stiff and they added a gag like that where it totally looked unplanned and the actors started laughing as if they were breaking character...every night the audience went wild.
it is what it is.

This is what it was when I saw it: Wilbur says 'Shabot Shalom!"; this is in the script. Then the following was all ad-libs:
Edna: I didn't know you were Jewish!
Wilbur: Well, ya never can tell.
Edna: Sure you can; it's easy!
Then later, when Edna says "You're rounding third base now!", she bent over so that her butt was facing Wilbur (implying anal sex).

Indeed they do. Thought it was some clever improv from Brian Conoly, but obviously not. I found it hysterical though

When I saw it in the West End with Michael Ball & Nigel Planer I thought the ad lib was hilarious!
The whole thing made it my favourite bit in the entire show.
I do think sometimes it's on purpose, but I like to believe they're just friends and make each other crack up.

Aww, they cracked up when I saw the tour of Hairspray 4 years ago in Chicago, too. I'm kinda disappointed it's planned. Sorta like in Spelling Bee, I guess, where an audience member spells this really hard word, and the judge says, with this totally stunned face, "That is correct." So much for getting to say, "Well, guess what happened at MY performance..."
