HAIR in the West End

The current revival of Hair will be produced in the West End next year:

West End performances are scheduled to begin at the Gielgud Theatre April 1, 2010, prior to an official opening April 14.... (T)he plan is to bring the current Broadway company to the West End.... The London transfer is being produced by the Public with Cameron Mackintosh and Broadway Across America.

Director Diane Paulus's statement about the transfer, which will feature the entire Broadway company:

Hair is a movement, and the movement is growing. With our current Broadway company spreading the 'love' in London, I am thrilled that another 'Tribe' will be born anew next Spring, and that they will take the show to a new level here in New York... With every step along the journey of making this Hair, the show has changed and grown, and it is my absolute intention to continue that process with a new cast. I am looking forward to the unleashing of a new 'Tribe' and to this next, most exciting, moment in the life of Hair."

This revival looks so great. It's a production of the show that I'd certainly love to see. Let the sunshine in, babies.

So looking forward to this - friends in NY tell me its brilliant.

Previews from 1 April - I won't get to it before the following week as I am in Paris from the 1st for Easter.

Loved the French revival earlier this year.

So many great songs and as relevant today as back in the 60s

The new NY cast take over on 13 March as the originals wing their way over to London to rehearse at the Geilgud Theatre.

Hoping to see it in mid-April before I pop over to Liege to see the French touring cast!

I guess this means goodbye to Avenue Q?
Hopefully it'll be moving somewhere else, because I've been dying to see it!
Would love to see Hair as well though!
Gonna start saving now.

I can't believe that they end the run of Avenue Q which I have been dying to see, right before I'm leaving to London, and the replacement is such a horrible musical as Hair! I know this is not a rant thread, but is Avenue Q really doing that bad? It is one of the greatest musicals of this century so far!
wtfchuck

I'm glad Hair is coming to the West End, and glad it's replacing Avenue Q. Avenue Q has had it's day, mainly being a gimmick musical using adult humour and puppets to draw in audience. If you look through these gimmicks then the musical is actuallly poorly structured and written.

I can understand how gimmicky Avenue Q is, but it was one of the first 'real musicals' (if you can't count disney) I heard.
I was desperate to see it, and I guess it's a lost cause, but I really hope Hair will be a success (no doubt it will be) and perhaps I could go see that.

Avenue Q isn't closing. It's moving to the Wyndhams Theatre to open on 19th March. Sorry to ruin all your happiness! Wink

...I'm not even going to dignify this with a legitimate response.
