guerilla theater

Did a Shakespeare marathon this weekend, which meant reading in staged readings of everything Shakespeare wrote, 24 hours a day for 4 days, on a stage in the middle of an outdoor mall's food court, right across the street from a bar. We were all fabulously sleep deprived, dehydrated, sun burned, harassed by the drunks, subsisting on crumbly brownies and dry pretzels and crappy coffee and other oddly assorted foods and beverages that don't really add up to a real meal... but I got to watch the sun come up at 6AM while reading the end of Julius Caesar. And I got to see people coming out in droves at 3 in the morning with their complete works in hand, following along with Winter's Tale.

So anyone wanna share their experiences with guerrilla theater? It's awful inspiring. Really reaffirms why I love this art form.

I've never done it and I'm not sure I could. Good for you to do that though.

Wow, that sounds super fun. I'd love to do something like that.

We did exactly that at the release of the Seventh Book- including a partially staged, semi-costumed production of Romeo and Juliet thrown together from random Hogwarts-y people on the spot wiht scripts from the Shakespeare section handed out to all.

come on yall. Really. Only 2 of us have ever done theater in a nontheater setting?

Let's expand this discussion and let's qualify theater done in nontheater settings as guerilla theater.

If you haven't actually done it, talk about what you'd like to do.

At youth theatre our political theatre class always stages something at some point on the last day, and yet somehow we're always surprised by it happening...I was going to take the class, but it was replaced with Brecht study last year, which was still super fun. We did a commentary on cell phone use for the showcase day, and at the very end one of the girls texted everyone she had gotten numbers for in the week prior and then held up a sign that said "Check your phones." The text sent to everyone was "you have been Brechtified." It was pretty awesome.
