Green Finch Key?Okay, I know you all hate this song, but I don't, so bear with me. My singing teacher's got me a copy of "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" in D flat major, which is supposedly the original key. However, that's way too low for my voice, and all the recorded versions I've heard have been in G major. I could probably get it transposed (there's a site online that'll sell me a copy, not for cheap, though), but what is the deal with the key? Do any of the former Johanna's remember the key/starting note, how high the song went, or, conversely, how low from their production? In D flat, it starts at A flat, goes to an A flat below the staff, and goes no higher than E flat, which just doesn't seem right for a soprano song.

I have it in Db Major as well. This is one of those songs, though, that can easily be transposed.

What's your vocal range? 'Cause if it's that low, I could probably sing it, my range is around there, I think.

i'm 99% positive that the original key is F Maj

I'm a soprano (the B flat below middle C to the D above high C). I think Johanna is supposed to be a soprano, but it could be one of those songs that is awkwardly out of range for the character (or maybe her classification as soprano is more to do with her weight).

That's a soprano range? (I'm not mocking or anything, I just don't know much about ranges.) But when you mean "high C" do you mean the next C after middle C? (Sorry if that sounds confusing.) And BTW, are you a trained soprano? (Have you taken lessons at all?)

When I say, high C, I mean the C two octaves above middle C (called top C by some). And, yeah, I've been trained (classical singing/musical theatre) for about three years now.

Wow. Three years? That's cool. (What I wouldn't give to have lessons! lol)
But you say the key is too low? Is there any way that you could post the music? (I'm curious, 'cause I'd like to see it, because whenever I've heard "Green Finch" it sounds like it's in a higher key cause I can't sing some of the notes.)

Music notes.com has it in Db, but you can put that into ANY key you want and buy it for five dollars.

Exactly what I meant when I said I was probably going to get it in another key.

Oh, well, you said "not for cheap" so I figured $5 was cheap.

Free is cheap...lol. But I just bought a copy from that site, transposed into F Major, and it's amazing. I can actually sing it! Thanks to everyone for the input!
