Green finch and linnet bird

I'm currently totally in love with this song. I know that many people do not agree. Why is this?
I confess I only know the film version and some people singing it on youtube.

I plan on practising the song myself as well.
dolbinau

The reason I'm not "totally in love with it" is because:

1. For me, it seems like a shallow song to present a stereotypical innocent/pure blonde girl.

2. There is so much other great music in the show/movie it has some stiff competition Razz.

I'd probably appreciate it more as a stand alone song rather than part of the story, though.

It is very similar to the typical virgin ingenue song of longing. However, I think it's slightly darker, so I appreciate it a little more than, say, "In My Life" from Les Miserables.
Sweeney Hyde

I love the symbolism in the song...but as far as the actual song goes it's just not as high on my list as the rest of the score...it's probably my least favorite song in the score.

I must confess that I am not that familiar with the musical yet. And I'm afraid that the only way of getting to know it better is through the film since there are no Sweeney productions going on here.

I found a lyrics site which has expanded lyrics for GFLB that aren't in the movie. Did they shorten the movie version?

Yes. By about half.

Really? I find myself snoozing during "My Friends" and "Wait." I can appreciate them on their own, but I find that they slow down the pace of the show. However, that could just be my ADD talking. Wink

That's evil.
I hate it when movie version butcher half the score. And yes you don't need to elaborate: I've browsed through these threads and I realise that a lot of things have been left out. I'd still really like to see this film however.

a film is not a play. you cant do things exactly the same.

the only thing ireally think they screwed up score wise in the film was not keeping the Judge's Mea Culpa in.

I agree. Rickman did a very good job, however I found that I didn't hate the judge as much as I felt I should. Mea Culpa would have upped his creep-factor a few knotches.

I missed the chorus. While I didn't mind the lack of ballads, I found myself aching for the chorus in "God That's Good." The song felt sort of empty without it.

I love "My Friends", but yeah, "Wait" and "Poor Thing" I can't really get into.

And I really like Green Finch and Linnett Bird, but if I ever played Johanna, my brother assures me that I would be disowned for betraying him by singing that song.

Really? I love "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" and is actually quite high on my list of favorites.
Fantine

Haha poor you, lottielou22.

I really love Alan Rickman, especially as Snape. So I'm afraid too that I might not really find him as loathe-worthy as I should find him.

I'm guessing the events with Anthony at Turpin's house and the keyhole were meant to replace 'mea culpa'. I guess it wasn't as effective.

i love this song! I sang it in my last recital.
I think it's really beautiful and haunting.

I agree totally about God That's Good. And I was extremely intrigued by Rickman's Turpin...he seemed more...aware of his...issues (if you could call them that) I mean when he's walking with the Beadle just before LATS, he asks the Beadle if the boy he sentenced to die deserved it, and when the Beadle commented that even if the boy wasn't guilty, he still must've done something earlier in life warrenting his death, Rickman replies "Haven't we all?"...This says to me that Rickman's Turpin is a little more self-aware, which is generally out of character, or so I assumed.
Fantine

It seems to me that all of Rickman's characters have that Smile

For me, the line "Are you screaming?" makes this song. The first time I heard it, it was really unexpected, and it completely brought the creepy back.

I love that line. Gives me chills.

I just love how the music contrasts with the melancholy Johanna is feeling.

I like the song but feel I am out of traning and I have been given the script recently to look over for an audition. before going to a beginners acting class. I didnt ask the others if they had been given the script on the off chance.
at 1.5 octave I dont consider myself strong enough vocally to try for it but I will certainly be watching the auditions.
I cant say I know a lot about Sweeney Todd as I havent seen the whole production. Yet I have watched some scenes online and found myself sitting like this O.O staring at the screen! I have ordered the version with Johnny Depp in and received it today.

Due to the graphic content there are some things that ring true in my life so, I have found it hard to watch it without becoming emotional and crying, especially "Green Finch & Linnet Bird" I know what it is like through fear not to see the world outside and not to be able to leave the situation. I would explain but I feel a public board would be too public and id like to spare you of the details.
I find it quite unusual that I have been handed the script to go over and really unsure if I should get involved.

should I avoid it? or should I get involved?
