GREASE!!!!

i'll be auditioning for a community college production of grease soon. i did some research on the character breakdown of vocal/age range and i fit marty, jan, and cha-cha. i'm 16, 5'2',dark/long brown hair, and brown eyes, and i'm a mezzo [belter] with a lot of dance experience (including latin/ballroom). i'm not sure which character i fit best though. also, i looked through my two musical theatre anthology books and the list here on musicals.net and i couldn't find an audition song that was appropriate to fit the time period or style of the show. any ideas for a good audition song? i was thinking "shy" from once upon a mattress... what do you think?

so... this is me. what do you think? which character could you see me playing?

any opinions and help would be very helpful. thank you in advance!

Hello Fatima.

I think you would be a good Cha-Cha or a Frenchie, as the girls who did the roles in my production both fit your profile.

Marty is the sex pot sophisticated one

Jan is the chubby plain jane.

cha-cha, with the amount of dance, you look to be a good fit.

Grease is an interesting show. Since you do have a lot of dance experience I would suggest Cha-Cha. Cha - Cha however is not a huge role but it's definetly interesting. All of the females in the show do a lot of dancing especially the chorus roles. The leads don't do as much especially Marty.

My suggestion would be first of all not to sing a song from the show. Sing something that is in your vocal range and somthing that you really love to sing.

Current Role: Silly Girl #1, Napkin/Plate “Beauty and the Beast”
Past Roles: Hermia "A Midsummer Night's Dream", Anne "The Diary of Anne Frank", Elaine Harper "Arsenic and Old Lace", Pepper, July, Annie "Annie", Brigitta "The Sound of Music", Dwarf, White Stag "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe", Alice "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", Rizzo "Grease"

marty

All of those roles are awesome, I was Marty in my school production, and Marty is in all of the dance scenes, so I got to dance a whole lot. And her song was really cute, "freddy my love". I tried out with "popular" from Wicked, I thought it was a good reflection of Marty's character. Just a little insight.

thanks for all your suggestions!
i think i'll be going for cha-cha.
and i'll be using 'spanish rose' from bye birdie.
i think it fits her character well.
i did grease before at my high school and actually ended up singing cha-cha's part in 'it's raining on prom night' because our cha-cha wasn't exactly a singer. or a dancer for that matter. but she was a senior. Wink so i am already familiar with the material she sings in the show.

^Don't you just hate it when the wrong person gets the part that they didn't nessacilly deserve. It happened with my high school's Fiddler on the Roof and it caused the director to cast two casts because one was the better tevye and other one got cast because his parents do everything pretty much in the theatre deparment.

actually of all the pink ladies Marty had the most to do next to Rizzo..she is the only other one with a big solo..plus she has all the great stuff with ZVince Fontaine.

Frenchy is the one with the least amount of material.

yes. but i guess that's just how most high school theatre works. it's all a popularity contest. Wink haha

i'm really excited about the audition tomorrow! i think this is going to be a very fun show. Very Happy

thank you! well, the audition was today. and i ended up getting a callback for marty instead. i'm more nervous about reading sides from the script then i am singing part of 'freddy my love'. but i have about two weeks to prepare for callbacks. so... hopefully they will go well. i'll just have to cross my fingers until then.
