Grease...movie versus musical? Can anyone tell me what the fundamental differences between Grease the movie and Grease the musical are? I've heard they're pretty different... |

well the film cuts
Marty's song - Freddie my Love Roger's Song- Mooning Sandy and Cha Cha's "Its Raining on Prom night" Doody's song- Those Magic Changes's Roger and Doody's song - Rock and Rock Party Queen Alma Mater Parody Shakin at the High Shool Hop also they cut "Alone at a Drive in" and replace it with "Sandy" they cut "All Choked Up" and replace it with 'Your the One that I Want" ( which doent even sound like a 50s song). they added "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "Grease" they also stole Kenikie's solo "Greased lightening" and gave it to Danny. another major difference is the addition of all the adult roles (Principal McGee,Coach,Vi, Blanche, etc) who were all played by famous 1950s celebrities. some of the roles played by 50s celebs like Ten Angel and Vince Fontaine are in the play as well. |

The movie cleans up the musical quite a bit. The musical's quite a bit edgier than the movie.
There's a book available of the libretto called "Grease : a new '50's rock'n'roll musical" which I recommend you take a look at to get a good feeling of the musical. And here's an online collection of the song lyrics: http://www.theatre-musical.com/grease/libretto.html |

I played Patty a few years ago. Let me just point out that Patty has a larger role in the stage show than in the movie. She does the Rydell fight song with Sandy, as well.

The fundemental difference is that the film is more embarrasing than the stage show!

they both arent great but both have good points. the 1950s icons are the highlight of the film version.

I personally prefer the movie for several reasons. Granted, some things about it are annoying (taking out songs, changing songs, adding songs that aren't period), BUT as far as the character acrs and the development of the characters as human beings relating one another, the movie is far superior.
In the movie you get a sense of each gang's relationships with each other and within themselves. The characters are more developed, have better dialogue and a lot of the scenes that don't work in the stage show are cut. I dunno, I just prefer it so much more. I wish I could explain more, but it's late lol. |

i like the singing in the movie much better...but i prefer the songs from the muscial...
in fact i was Kennicke... http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=31409207 my problem with all the professional Broadway singers... i think they were too "musical sounding"...im not sure how to explain it...like they were trying way too hard or somthing... im not saying my Greased Lightnin is all that great... but i hate how the Broadway guys do it...they dont seem to graps that the point of the song is "i want to have a really cool car so chicks will wanna do it with me"... |

I tihnk Barry Bostwick's Danny is much more 50
s sounding and appropriate than Travoltas. |

Personally, I love the movie more.
Last summer I saw it at La Comedia dinner theater. I knew that there would be differences, but I left feeling kinda... unfufilled. Except for the girl playing Rizo. She blew the house down. I would also have kept Mooning in the movie. It was a great song and should have stayed. Besides that, I prefer the movie. |

Rogers name was changed in the movie to Putzie.

Jan and Roger "putzie" werent fat.

Stage version is better by far.
Funnier songs and more character driven that about the damn car. Though I like Hopelessly Devoted and Sandy better then the original songs. |

yeah but it sounds really raw and raspy to me... i would want a more Elvis kind of sound for Grease... |

I think both are crap. | ||

Actually, it's funny. One of the differences no one mentioned was the fact that yes, Roger's name was changed to Putzie, BUT, Putzie's personality is actually that of Doody's, Sonny's is more of Roger's from the show, and Doody in the movie is that of Sonny from the show. If you watch the movie and know the show, you'll know exactly what I mean. For example:
Movie Putzie/Show Doody: The young, inexperienced and pubescent T-Bird. Movie Sonny/Show Roger: A little heavier, the wisecracker and always eating. Movie Doody/Show Sonny: The greaseball/wanna-be ladies man of the group. Very Italian as well. |
