Grease Revival

What's your opinion on the upcoming revival of Grease?

I'm actually looking forward to it. It looks promising.
musikal_geek

I'm VERY excited for it. Max and Laura will do an amazing job, guaranteed! The rest of the supporting cast looks great, too! Very Happy
i'm_back

I so wanted Ashley Spencer to win
klutzyk8ie

I wanted Austin to win. But I never watched the show live, so I couldn't vote Sad.
Salome

Its a poorly written show.

they just has a revival in the 90s

the whole reality show junk is disgusting.
pish123c

The original Grease was great. It is crude, hilarious, and a good sattire on high school life.

Chances are, the revival will just take the shitty John Travolta Olivia Newton John movie that was nothing but fluff and put it on stage. I'd rather go to Blockbuster and pay 4 bucks to rent the movie than pay a hundred to see the same thing live, which is most likely what this revival will be.

Unfortunately, screaming fan girls will want to see it so much it will probably run for a long time.

I never understand how people can love the sogs from Grease, they are alright, but not the best. I don't find them that catchy.

It's a boring plot as well.

I like some of the songs. I've always liked Summer Nights, and my favorite is We Go Together. I think its the best song in the show. And Sandra Dee is funny.
musikal_geek

Well, Grease was a big part of my childhood. I saw the movie when I was five or six, and I watched it all the time after that. By the age of nine I knew all of the lines and lyrics.

So it's always been a big part of my life as a kid, so it would be hard for me to stop liking it now, ya know?

I like the music from Grease, but the plot and just pretty much overall the whole idea just bothers me. I've seen the movie several times and I saw a very good stage production, and the plot really bothers me. I mean, basically it has the message if you change your entire personality and pretend to be someone you're not, you will be happy and catch the guy of your dreams.
thewordisno

I wouldn't mind it if Max weren't in it. I think he's not Danny material. Vocally or physically. He has no business being in it. None of the boys on the show really did though.
Matthew

The Jan: Lindsay Mendez, is FANTASTIC. Best friend. No joke.
candymancan

I always wondered what fans would think when all tey have seen is the movie and they go see te staged version and realize it is a lot miore different.
Audrey II

I feel like the reality show thing is kind of cheap, because the winners weren't really cast. They are only preforming for the previews, and as soon as it really starts they are bringing in professionals.

Seriously? I don't remember reading anything about that, and that's definitely something I would remember...
musikal_geek

If you're serious about this, my trip to New York will be cancelled... do you have a link or a source or anything??
Audrey II

I just heard from a friend, sorry. But I'm pretty sure they are right.
Eponine93

Audrey II... what you hear from a friend isn't always right.

There's nothing to suggest the leads are just doing the show for previews, nothing at all. Luc I wouldn't worry if I were you.

Of course, you could always go to NY and see Les Mis instead. Wink

Yes, but chances are this revival will basically be the movie on stage. Confused

And then we can put our plan into action! Surprised
Eponine93

The chances of my mom taking me to see Les Mis again hover around one or two out of a hundred.

The chances of my dad taking me to see Les Mis again hover around zero.

The chances of my mom letting me go in the city alone and get Student Rush tickets hover in the negative numbers.

But at least you'll see a great show...
reedzee

I've never really been a fan of Grease, and I really disliked the movie. If it is just a remake of the movie, I wouldn't see it.
Jman383

The thing about the 30 day trial IS true, I know this for a fact, it was confirmed by NBC I think? They could always be extended, but who knows? I'll try and find a link!

No, the set designs for the revival show that there are several scenes that exist only in the stage version (i.e. cut from the film) that will be intact for the revival.

1. Yes, the original was great. Having performed that version of GREASE (in high school), I can say it is much better than the film.

2. The London cast in the '90's did do the film version onstage. The version even has a song called "Danny" where the "Love Is a Many Splendid Thing" sequence is. So, it's been done.

3. Screaming girls... why is this a bad thing? Every actor should expect that and know how to deal with it. It's part of the profession. Plus, who doesn't want long running shows?

No, she isn't. And she's right.
Besides the message of ~*~summer lovin'~*~ what is the message? Become either a bad girl or a good boy and get the significant other of your dreams?

No thank you.

GREASE is all about fun. I highly doubt that the writers wanted to put a message in the show.

When we did the show, the "message" was never discussed. Mainly because it's not important. If there IS any type of message in the show, it would have to be how Teen Angel talks Frenchy into going back to high school... insulting her in the process, mind you.

I really think that people look at GREASE for something that's not there. GREASE doesn't try to solve problems. It doesn't preach. It's not philosophy... it's the '50's. It's GREASE. It's great. Shut up.

Andy.
musikal_geek

Andy,

Calm down. It's legal now to have different opinions.
jcstar

I was perfectly calm when I wrote that.

I certainly hope that this GREASE revival doesn't have the awful version of Beauty School Dropout that I heard on the last Broadway revival cast. I read something about Teen Angel talking to a puppet or something.

I just remember a lot of talking when he should have been singing.

Oh... Chubby Checker once played Teen Angel in Grease. Was the Broadway or a tour? Did anyone see him in the role?

Andy.
frenchhorngirl

the problem with you ssaying that it wasn't meant to have a message andy, is just that. a great show should be more than just cotton candy-fun song and dance numbers. a truly great show has a plotline that has a message.
jcstar

But, you haven't told me what the "message" of GREASE is. Therefore, until you can enlighten me as to what it is, I will ignore you.

(I'm in a Simon Cowell mood today)

Ha! she's nice compared to others.

And now that this argument has yet another comment in it.....
Y0UCANTST0PTHEBEAT

To answer everyone's questions as to whether or not the revival is just the movie on stage or not:

It's the original show, with only "Alma Mater", the "Alma Mater" parody, "Alone At A Drive In Movie", and "All Choked Up" missing from the original score. "Hopelessly Devoted To You", "Sandy", "You're The One That I Want", and "Grease" (all from the film) have been added into the show.
ilovebway

I'm not too excited about the revival.
I'm not sure why though, I'm just not.

I didn't see the reality show, so anybody care to fill me in about it?

I didn't see the reality show either, but my friends did and they got all excited about it and dragged me along to see it (the musical). Granted, it was fun hanging out with my friends, but the show was... well, more on that later.

Anyway, the reality show was apparently a bunch of people competing for the starting roles in Grease. The judges would cut people each week until only two people were left-- a guy and a girl. Those two were then declared victorious and cast as the lead roles in the musical. The viewers in TV-land who cheered for those two throughout the course of the reality show are thus very likely to go out and buy tickets to the musical to see them perform.

So, as someone who hadn't seen the movie before and thus was completely new to the plot when watching the musical, I have to say I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who finds the message disturbing. Near the end, as Sandy is going through her "self-reflection" song and trying to decide what to do, I was ready for her to come out and say something like "I will stay true to myself, no matter what other people think." But instead she comes out and basically says, "Hey look at me! I've given up my ideals and changed myself so I can fit in with you everyone else! Isn't that cool?!" and my mouth just dropped in disbelief. I was about ready for a Camel Cigarette ad to flash across the stage or something. Maybe I can't relate because I didn't grow up in that era, but any show that preaches conformity and giving into peer pressure in order to fit in with the cool crowd at the expense of abandoning your ideals and increasing your risk for heart attack and cardiac arrest seems beyond idiotic to me.

But, morals and messages aside, some of the songs were catchy and the fat guy was quite good. Also, the teenage fairy reminded me of Prince Charming from Shrek, so that was very funny.

thank you. i'm sure he would too, as i'm sure he's confident enough in his body to not be bothered by someone stating the obvious. or should I have been more PC? besides, wasn't that role intentionally cast for someone of "heavy" build? if you watch the dance choreography, some of it looked like it was intended to poke fun at his physical stature. in any case, i thought he had the best voice out of all the cast.
