Grease - musical vs. movieWhat do you find are the main differences? Do you think an audience would be disappointed to find some of the more favoured songs of the movie aren't in the musical?

Its not a great show by any means but I was always pissed off that Freddy My Love,Mooning and All Choked Up were cut from the film version. and some rather awful songs like Hopelessly Devoted to you and The One That I Want were added.
also its a disgrace that Kenikie's big number goes to Danny in the film.

I second that! I love "Mooning"! They cut out all the good songs for the film!

I played Roger (Rump rump!) last summer and let me tell you, I had never seen the movie before performing the show and I was P.O.ed that he wasn't in the movie!

Well the original is a dirty dirty show. Full of sexual reference both obscure and not so obscure. The movie is a watered down version of the play that had it's balls lopped off and was stripped of any relevance or satire. The movie is an abomination and a tribute to filmaking by committe which does nothing but panders to the lowest common demominator.
Because of the movie the play is now one of the most perfomed plays in high schools and middle schools. Not the original play, no, the cleaned up version now available.
You really can't see the original version anymore but to get the spirit of it I suggest renting Grease 2. Much closer to the stage version than Grease.

Sorry so busy spewing bile I forgot to answer your question. Most productions I've been forced to sit through add the songs from the movie to please the audience.
They also chop scenes and cut songs. Sort of their little way of saying
f%&k you Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. We don't care about you or your work we just want to charge people $35 or more to see the same story they can get at the video store for $2.
Sorry did it again
Sorry.

I don't mind, because my small city won't know the difference but it is a bit sad that they're cutting out a few of my favourites from the musical to replace with ones from the movie.

Grease 2 sucks. nothing beats the original stage version. all the songs and music were way better than the film. i dont get why people dont like "All Choked Up" - i prefer it to "You're The One That I Want". and, you dont need "Since I Don't Have You" - what a pointless song - it's not even written by Jacobs/Casey - why the hell was it thrown in there back in '94? keep the show as is. people can deal. who wants to see a movie done on stage, anyhow?!

plus "youre the one that I want" is such a 70s song. "all Choked up" is perfectly blended into the show. its says 1950s all over.

Ugh, I hate Grease 2. I like maybe two songs and the rest pretty much makes me cringe (But being such a Grease junkie I suppose I'll end up buying the CD anyway *sigh*)
PS I don't know if there's already a thread on this, but I've becomed obsessed with "You're the One That I Want." Even though the fact that EVERY SONG they sing on it is form the movie and not the play and the people are all vaguely stupid... plus there aren't any exceptionally talented professionals even though it was supposedly open to pros, obviously some union had an issue with the TV studio... but I love watching the people who suck and as aforementioned, I am a Grease junkie

That's because a lot of pros don't want to involve themselves with the whole nonsense and are just sitting back and laughing at the idea of this whole mess.
I watch the show though too, mostly it was to laugh a bit at some of the people who thought they could get through and the high schoolers who got so upset after being cut...hello, you're 16 and 17 years old competing against people who have way more experience and talent then you, there's no way you were going to actually get the role....ugh.

And I loved the guy who was like, Grease is in my blood man, and couldn't sing or dance or ANYTHING (AND they let him in. What kind of message does that send out??)

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Grease the movie, made as a joke? I heard, through the unreliable grapevine, that it was making fun of how fake and cheesey the stage version was. After hearing this, I sat down and watched Grease.
I was convinced.
Once agian, correct me if I am wrong.
