I'm going out for Little Shop tomorrow (for the voice of Audrey II). I was just going to pull out "My Friends" from Sweeney Todd, since the range is good and it's kind of creepy.

But then I thought... why not get creepy AND fun? Given that it IS in a musical... why not do "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch"?

Thoughts?

I really like the idea of My Friends. As long as you know the accompanist and that he/she can handle Sondheim, it's a really really good choice for that role. I think showing your range is as, if not more, important than comedy for Audrey II. You can act the Sweeney song a lot if you work on it.

I would suggest going with "My Friends", although I do commend you for trying to spice up your audition with a little bit of Dr. Seuss' playfulness, I feel that 16 bars of Mr Friends would show off a better range than 16 bars of "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch", although I have a feeling you would most defenitely be remembered for that one. Either way; I would choose Sweeney. Break-a-leg!

I don't know the accompanist, but for a Sondheim song, it's downright melodic and catchy, so I'm not scared of it for that reason, at least. Thanks for the input. I guess I could just do "My Friends" a little more... peppy... than you'd expect.

I was still kind of mulling it over, but as luck would have it, I was doing "My Friends" for a Halloween cabaret show Saturday, and did a runthrough a couple times with an accompanist on Thursday. It went so well, I decided to just use it for the audition on Friday.

Three high school kids auditioned in front of me Friday -- they weren't bad, but they weren't trained or fully developed singers -- then I got up there and basically blew the auditors through the back wall of the room. The reaction went something like "So... um... what's your conflict schedule like, again?"

Heh. Got the call last night and I indeed got the part. So, happy endings and all that. Still think the Grinch song would be a neat idea for the part, though. Thanks for the input.
