Good musicals for collegeI'm trying to think of good musicals to suggest for my college's student theatre organization and I was wondering if you have any suggestions. I'm looking for a show that would be possible for students to produce technically, that has good ensemble parts. The talent pool is pretty good. We have several male and female actor/singers and a few dancers that can pull off the skill needed for most shows except perhaps more operatic pieces.
I would like to suggest shows that are good but also are not run of the mill, everyone has done them.
For a better idea this is a list of shows the group has done in the past:
Sweet Charity, Anything Goes, Pal Joey, Damn Yankees, Kiss Me, Kate, Caberet, Pippin, A Chorus Line, Joseph ATATDC, Little Shop of Horrors, The Music Man
Thanks

Most of the ones that were on your "just did them" list would be my choices, but otherwise I'd go for either Bat Boy or Urinetown.

Of Thee I Sing, (requires cast of about 38 ). Amateur version (1952) is from Samuel French and professional version (1931) from MTI (concert version available). Very similar except amateur version changes references to The Great Depression. Great for an election year.
Strike Up the Band (1927 version) Requires cast of 17, some extra chorus can be added. Plot is a cross between "The Mouse That Roared" and The Marx Bros "Duck Soup" - George S. Kaufman wrote the book, so maybe that's why.
Both OTIS and SUTB are very politically oriented and can tie in with history or Political Science curriculum - study guides are available from MTI. Both have music and lyrics by the Gershwin bros.
The Golden Apple. (Moross and Latouche, 1954). Transfers events surrounding The Trojan War and The Odyssey to Mount Olympus (get it?) in Washington State 1900-1910. Requires cast of about 35-38. No dialogue - all sung. From Tams-Witmark.
Fiorello! (Bock and Harnick, 1959). Another political show by the Fiddler on the Roof / She Loves Me team. The bio of NYC's Mayor LaGuardia.
Man of La Mancha (Leigh, 1965) takes on The Spanish Inquisition.

Once Upon a Mattress is a relatively easy one to put on and has GREAT chorus numbers.
