Good English translation(s) of the original novel?Which would you recommend?

Phantom On A Budget

I would recommend the Lowell Bair translation (Bantam Books), personally. I like it a lot. The de Mattos is by far the most abundant, but generally considered the worst translation out there. I've heard mixed reviews about the one by Leonard Wolf, and I don't recall any feedback about the Jean-Marc Lofficier and Randy Lofficier adaptation.

Carrie Hernandez had feedback about the Lofficiers on her site before she took it down. I remember that it was good, and that they rectified the somewhat mystifying grasshopper bit (they changed it to a frog..."if the frog croaks, we all croak with it"...something about the pun coming across better).

I think my school library actually has a copy of the Blair translation...I read about halfway through it back in grade 10...it was good, but I lost interest after a while. I think it was because someone took it out for a long time and my interest began waning because I didn't have access to it.
