Yes.

In Wicked Glinda's name is Galinda (for some unapparent reason, which, I am sure, is clarified moreso in the novel). Well Galinda had a teacher, Mr. Dillamond, who could not pronounce her name. Instead, he said "Glinda". Later in the show he is discriminated and in memory of him and in rebellion she changes it to Glinda. I don't see the purpose of this and find it makes things rather confusing.

"Galinda" is a traditional name in the Gilikin area of Oz that Galinda comes from. In both the book and the show, Doctor Dillamond can not pronounce her name correctly and calls her "Glinda". So in both, when he is 'taken care of' Galinda decides to change her name. In the show, it is more of a way to get Fiyero's attention. In the book, I don't think they spend a lot of time on it other than a mere mentioning that she did it but if I remember correctly she does take the Doctor's death pretty hard. I think it's more a show of her character. That she wants to make a difference and be more than a pretty face but all the while she really doesn't know how and she isn't willing to risk everything to do it.

The Good Witch's name change means more than a tribute to Dr. Dillamonds memory. Galinda is the selfish, somewhat shallow, young girl that appears in the beginning of the "flashbacks" that are basically the show.
When Galinda changes her name to Glinda, it marks a turning point in her personality, where she becomes more open, understanding and a generally kind person overall. Remember, Galinda was so completely rude and disrespectful to Dr. Dillamond when he couldn't pronounce her name, it showed complete ineptitude for grasping higher morals or thoughts. Changing her name to Glinda was like saying "oh.okay, I was wrong, and now I understand. Ive grown from this into the person and sorceress I will eventually become". Without the change in her character, Glinda may have never gotten as far as she did.

Hopefully this helped. I just wanted to prove that, yes, the change was necessary, and signified something more to those with a little deeper thought.

I have to slightly disagree. G(a)linda remains pretty selfish and superficial up until Nessarose's death. She has deeper feelings but she still puts her image and hurt feelings before the safety of her best friend. It may have put the idea into her head but Glinda doesn't really change until her actions bring about horrible consequences.

yes, I completely agree with what your are saying. What I was trying to communicate was that, here is where the seed begins, as cliche as that is.

Okay, didn't quite get that in your first post. I really do the the character of Glinda. So much more there than meets the eye.

Glinda or Galinda?

I'm not sure, but didn't G(a)linda change her name so Fiyero and Elphaba would know that she cared about Dr. Dillamond? I haven't read the book, so I'm not positive.

In the show, it was more or less to impress them, yes. I think, though, in the novel she changed it because she genuinely did care. But I haven't read the book in a while so I don't remember exactly.

I love how we stopped talking about this two years ago.

She doesn't care about Dr. Dillamond. She only did it because all of the attention wasn't on her.
