I have read in several sources that the song "Getting to Know You" was added to The King and I during out of town tryouts, and that the tune was taken from "Suddenly Lucky," a song cut from South Pacific.

Does anyone know what the original lyrics were or what the context of that song was in South Pacific (perhaps this should be on the SP forum). I'd be very interested to know.
