Gershwin Jukebox Musicals

Playbill has announced a "new Gershwin musical" for 2009: Nice Work if You Can Get It, which will star Harry Connick, Jr. with Kathleen Marshall at the helm. This is in the wake of another "new Gershwin musical", An American in Paris.

So this follows the trend to make "new Gershwin musicals" that we've seen like My One and Only and Crazy For You, the latter of which I admit I adore unreservedly.

General discussion please. Is this a good way to bring Gershwin music and lyrics back to Broadway? Would any of the original books stand up on their own feet? Does the process work better using a completely new book with a free pick of the songs? Or is it better to do a new adaptation of one of the original shows, with a focus on rewriting the book and the option to add other songs?

I think this is a great way to present Gershwin to the younger generation. their music is timeless, but their original story lines are dated and don't play as well with today's audiences. The Gershwin songbook is so extensive that is is easy to weave a new story around arrangements of their existing songs.

I agree with you about Crazy for You. I saw it's first run on Broadway and fell in love with the show. I have since been involved in staging it for a youth theatre group I work with. It was probably the best received show we ever did, and it got rave reviews from the community.

Anything has got to be better than "We Will Rock You 2" this sort of laziness really makes me worried for musical theatre.
