General Cartwright?

Hi!

I'm new here, (first post!) and my school is doing Guys and Dolls this year. I'm 5'4, long straight black hair, brown eyes with a fairly low female voice, definitely alto although my highest note is F above middle C. Strong actress and singer, okay dancer. I'm wondering whether I have a chance at any of the female leads at all? The musical directors often transpose things for the lead actresses, especially if the original score is way too high or low. Thought I ought to mention that as well...

Also, how big is General Cartwright's part in the stage play? I've only seen the movie, and I'm wondering if she has any singing, or if it's just a few lines of dialogue?

Thanks SO much!

Cartwright is about the same in the play as the movie. Whether she sings in "Sit Down" is the musical director's decision.

I played General Cartwright and I had so much fun with this character. I decided to flirt with Nathan. It was as resonably good part because there isnt that many speaking girl parts in Guys and Dolls. I was in Sit Down Your Rocking in the boat.

How old does General Cartwright have to be? I'm 21, is that too young? Sorry, I don't know the show at all.

she is an older woman. about 50-60

I'd say go for sarah or agatha based on your type.

Ahh, sorry Salome, for asking what is definitely going to be a stupid question: but who's Agatha?
sunrae

Agatha is one of the members of the mission. She has about two or three lines.

dont go for Sarah if you're an alto- she's very much a soprano (or high mezzo)

Agreed. I believe her top note is either a G or an A.

Gen. Cartright

I Agree!

Playing Gen. Cartwright was great for me, it is a supporting roll with a moderate amount of lines. It was perfedt for me to get over my stagefright

If your an alto go for Adelaide. She's a good alto part about your age. You seem to very much look like an Adelaide. She needs to do a bit of dancing in the Hot Box scenes, but often directors have the Hot Box Girls do the heaviest dancing. Work on your Brooklyn accent though, you haven't got a shot at getting Adelaide without it.

adelaide is about 35-45.
