Funny Girl helpOur school musical next year is Funny Girl, as some of you heard in my help-me-guess thread awhile ago. As I'm leaving for the summer soon, I'm planning my audition now.I've seen the movie, but Mr. G claims it will be an ensemble-based piece and advises against using the movie as an indicator of what we're going to have. He also said, pertaining to Fanny, that "I am not looking to cast a Barbra Streisand, I am looking to cast a Fanny Brice. The two are very different." That being said, I'm not desperate for the role, but I would really, really like it. Problem is, I don't know what she was like, how to put what she was like into the musical, and how to do my audition. The auditions have to be out of this book, through which I've looked several times, but I'm still not sure what I should do. He wants to know his actresses can belt well, so it'd have to be a belt song, and one I could learn over the summer. Range isn't really a problem, as mine's very flexible. If you can help with tips or a song suggestion, I'd be incredibly grateful. |

You can do lots of research on the real life Fanny Brice online. The main things? You've got to have a killer voice with the range for all the pieces. You need to be a natural physical comedian. You need to make the audience fall in love with you, while they laugh at you. You need to be a performer, really put yourself out there for your audience.
I took a quick look at the pieces in that book, and these are the ones that I think can show the personality of Fanny Brice: Always True To You In My Fashion Don't Rain On My Parade (if you're allowed to do something from the show) I Got The Sun In The Morning Look What Happened To Mabel The Music That Makes Me Dance (again, if you can do songs from the show) |
