Fun With Stunt Casting

Stunt Casting has become a tradition on both Broadway and the West End, so let's have fun. Which celebrities (especially if they can sing) could play roles actually well?

Jim Carey- Orin et al, Little Shop of Horrors (since Jim is always accused of being too animated and over-the-top, this would be the part for him)

Will Ferrell- Amos, Chicago

I agree with putting Jim Carey in Little Shop... heck, he could play Seymour, too. I would love to see Will Ferrel on Broadway, but I don't see him as Amos. I really want to see Barbra Streisand's return to Broadway.

........... Shocked .......
What Is This Feeling?

I guest that makes me strange and an outcast.... oh well, fun!
Matthew

You're an odd one.

I'm going to say this...and...everyone will probably hate me.

But, here it is:

When I saw the Carnegie hall concert version of South Pacific, I LOVED Reba's portrayal of Nellie. Of course, Reba's too old.

So, when I heard about the planned revival in '08, I immediately thought...KELLIE PICKLER!

She's as dumb as a door knob, but I REALLY THINK SHE COULD DO IT.

Also...how about Ellen as the Godmother in R&H's Cinderella?
It would do SO MUCH to redeem Whitney Houston's turn as the out of control diva in the '97 movie.

While I'm making everyone hate me, I heard back when the RENT movie was still in the works that Kelly Clarkson might be playing Maureen.
I wasn't so upset about that.

...and I'm anxiously awaiting Streisand's return.
Can we get someone to talk to her about that?

Perhaps is that masculine profession of yours.

ugh! reba ruined that role..she sounded like well..reba. a tenesse middleaged awful country singer. not Nellie..a young Arkansas nurse.
jonvaljohn

Here's the thing about Reba: If she were the correct age, she would have fit the role SO WELL. I'll also say that she has this...I dunno...swoopy effect to her voice that is just a little bit much. It's great for the crazy belty hick she played in AGYG, but doesn't fit the (bit) softer mezzo of a role like Nellie.

I really just loved her interpretation of the character.

Typecasting at its best...age not withstanding.
Salome

miscasting at its best. she was too coarse..too rough and the accent was all wrong. she was awful!

No, just British.

Actually, I have heard a wonderful rumor that Victoria Clark will play Nellie, and I HOPE she does SO SO SO much. I loved her in Piazza.
BwayJuvinile

I would love to see John Stamos as Corny Collins in Hairspray
Robinflamingo

Bill Murray as Fagin

Oprah as Golde

Curtis Stone as Will Parker

...more to come

i love Clarke but she is too old for Nellie. Kerry Butler or Sutton Foster would be wonderful Nellies.
Salome

some ideas...

Steve Carrell as Mr. McAffee in Bye Bye birdie.
Arlo Guthrie as Baladeer in Assassins.

YES! I love it. Steve Carrell could be the next Paul Lynde.

Perhaps if Victoria Clark is too old, the lady from the Piazza tour could do it. She looks a bit younger in her headshot.
Salome

Christine Andreas. she is a wonderful actress. she was liza in the 1976 My Fair Lady..Laurie in the 1980 Oklahoma and Maurgeuiritte in Scarlet Pimpernel. but She is also in her 40s now also she looks 30 something.
Salome

I thought of another good piece of stunt casting...

Steve Martin as Applegate in Damn Yankees.

she has to be in her 50s. I'm 47 and she's quite a bit older than me.

She's listed as being five years older than me, and I'm three years older than Chevstriss...

No.

No, you aren't.

Go see Dreamgirls again immediately.

Nah, she just doesn't do it for me. I also think it's nothing to do with being British cos when she does come over for concerts, the nellies fill the audiences and it's advertised all over the gay press.

Dreamgirls? Not even seen it once yet.

I'm just not camp. Cool
Matthew

That could be it, too.
Lazarus (Adam G)

The worst stunt casting ever was Sebastian Bach in JCS and Jekyll & Hyde. That guy can't act for sh*t.

Salome wrote:

If Sutton Foster were cast as Nellie, I'd probably shit myself.
...in a good way.

I really think they should cast an unknown in that part, and beef up the rest of the cast with crazy star potential. If Stanley Tucci weren't a thousand and one years old, I'd like to see him play Billis.

Now, for some more on-topic business:
Jennifer Hudson as Sofia. (crazy, now that Fantasia is going to be Celie)
Mandy Moore as Penny Pingleton (perhaps the role that's endured the most stunt casting EVER), or Sandy.
Lindsay Lohan as Roxie Hart (she couldn't be any worse than Ashley Simpson).
Reese Witherspoon would be a GREAT Glinda, if she had the range for it.
Jamie Foxx as Billy Flynn.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnd...Beyonce as Eliza in MFL.
