Freaked out by religion in general!

Dear Musicals.Net Posters,

Perhaps my opinions are really warped, but I am, more or less, freaked out by the concept of religion in general.

I mean, isn't anyone else slightly freaked out by the images of silent, placid nuns, like those in TSOM? What about those freaky religious statues and figures of nuns holding children? <Shivers>

I mean, there's just something wrong about monks' robes and nuns' habits. There's also something wrong about living a life of celibacy, etc., and projecting an image which seems to be devoid of eroticism, etc. I mean, which sort of a personality must you be hiding if eroticism is absent from you? I don't want to know!

Religion sometimes seems as though it's almost the worst aspect of the world! I know that I'll probably be damned by God for saying that, but God will just have to damn me.

I am a baptized Episcopalian (Please refrain from throwing those gay priest jokes at me! I know about that.), but I feel that religion has disappointed me at every turn in the road of my life.

Are you freaked out by religion in general?

Thanks in advance for your participation in the poll, and for your replies.

No. People are very much allowed to believe in whatever they want to believe in. And what a Christian does might seem strange to a Mormon, but it's completely normal to the Christians.

If a woman wants to devote her life to her love for her religion then so be it, and power to her. The woman who does that is strong and doesn't care what other people think, and is believing in what she loves, there's no harm in that.

I've read my share of opposing points of views (atheist and theist) that could only be considered etreme radicalism.

For the most part I'm not freaked out at all. (Although I was surprised at atheists)

I think religion can be a really good thing when not taken too far. I don't agree with people who try to convert others to their religion. I also don't agree with people who force their children to follow their religion. I think it is something that should be decided by an individual, not just because their family agrees with it.

While my religion isn't all that "religious" (I'm a Unitarian Universalist), it does give some meaning to my life. And while I don't believe in God, that does give meaning to some people's lives.

I think people are entitled to it, and indeed I am glad that they have it, because it makes the world so interesting. However when religion becomes the center of a conflict, then it gets a little scary. I don't agree with anyone taking their religion to the extreme. I don't agree with people making major life decisions just because their religion tells them to. I don't agree with people hurting and/or degrading other people because of their religion.

Honestly though, if nothing else, think about all the great architecture, history, and of course theatre, that we would be missing out on if there was no religion in the world.

Oh, and as for nuns and monks, I do think it's a bit weird, but whatever floats your boat. I wouldn't do it, but if it's what they believe in and if it's the path they want to follow, that's cool.

I'm the wrong one to ask. I teach in a Lutheran school, go to church Sunday, pray constantly, and have been a national representative for the women's group in my church...

My husband's aunt was a nun for 76 years, and there was nothing creepy about her. His uncle is a priest, and has been for over 50 years. Nothing creepy about him either Smile In fact, they are/were very happy, blessed, peaceful people.

FYI, Mormons are Christian, we use the King James Version of the Bible, we believe in Christ, etc.

I think that religion is not totally crazy and that if it is such a crazy thing why does almost everyone in the world belong to a religion?

I did...but the new forum was hateful. At least here people aren't mean for the sake of how many swear words they can fit in a sentence. And the week or so that I was at the other forum, they NEVER TALKED ABOUT THEATRE. So I came back, and vowed to not discuss religion anymore, except to say that I am religious.

I'm here for the shows, man!!

I knew that but it seemed appropriate to say welcome back and have the public acknowledgement there.
Matthew

True, I suppose.

LOL, ^^^ doesn't like me much...

And thanks to those of you that said nice things to me today. My uncle went into hospice Monday, we saw him Wednesday, and last night at 8 PM he passed away. We open in three weeks. I've been making costumes for days. And I've been very depressed about my general fatigue and lack of eyelashes and eyebrows, which is ridiculous, but I'm only human. And Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is a rerun tonight. SO the nice words were MUCH appreciated.
*muAH!*

(and this was so random it should be in The Random Thread. Very Happy)
Matthew

I don't dislike you, girlfriend!
