But I think ya'll are sissies anyway, lol. Razz Twisted Evil

I don't know if i would call Edward Rutledge a tenor by far...I sing Molasses to Rum all of the time and I know JOHN CULLUM one of the greatest baritones ever played him in the movie Mr. Green

the last baritone part i played was bill in me and my girl, but before that i did javert in a schools version of les mis and jesus in jcs... i also did an extract from Phantom where i was phantom it was the luring christine down into the lair and singing music of the night... i have it her somewhere if i ever find it il post it.

what about you?

Steve
Sweeney Hyde

I'm thinking to myself right now, "I'm not jealous...I will catch up someday..." but i really am...did you do the school edition of Les Miserables?
Beagle On Stage

Honestly, it seems to me that except for a few roles that are obviously BASS and a few that are obviously TENOR, most of them sit around in that most-people-can-sing-it, low A to high G range. It's less important that someone be a tenor than it is that they can sing the notes.

There are always those people who insist that anyone calling themselves a baritone should have a high A or whatever. But most men are baritones, and most of them don't have very good high notes. Pull some guy in off the street, and it will be unusual if he can get above a high E or F.

So then you have to define what each voice "type" means. Is it range, vocal coloring, or a combination of both? What about those odd ducks that have a rich, dark voice, but can't get below low C, or similarly have a lighter voice but can't actually sing high?

All of that said, I'm a tenor, and I would rather have my high notes than a bass's low notes any day. You just usually get more mileage out of them. Does it really matter if you can hit a bottom C? Maybe, but really, how many times will you get to use it.
Da_Dark_Dude

im asking about range, quality, what your vocal coach would classify you as. baritones are techniqually only required up to F aren't they? or are they?
Sweeney Hyde

Baritones are generally G-E, actually...this is according to wikipedia...
Da_Dark_Dude

hmmm...
Quique

I've been told I'm a baritone. Some have even said I'm a bass, which I doubt. Personally, I have nooo idea. lol.

I posted a clip of myself singing something from Les Mis over at Musical-Forums.net recently. I've never had training and I most definitely have my fair share of nasty flaws, so sorry about that, lol. But based on the sound of my voice, what would you guys say I am?

You can also read all the constructive critcism others have given me over in that thread. It was very appreciated and if anyone here has anything to add, I'd be very grateful as I'm always looking to improve. One of my major flaws is my horrific Idina Menzel-esque breathing, lol. Embarassed

Some say my vibrato is a tad heavy but, personally, I love my LuPone-ish vibrato, haha. Though I do agree that it can get too heavy at times.

Da_Dark_Dude

i would say baritone... maybe even tenor
Sweeney Hyde

Yeah probably a baritone, however, if you work on some higher music you could probably be a tenor pretty quickly...but who wants that burden thrust upon them? Mr. Green
Quique

Thanks muchachos! =)
Da_Dark_Dude

^^ ha!and by the way you have a fantastic voice.
Sweeney Hyde

If, for whatever stupid reason, you do want to be a tenor try some of Archibald's songs from The Secret Garden and The Soldier's song from 1776 "Mama Look Sharp" They will undoubtably help.

If you are sixty, African-American and can find a revival...Old Man River?

As usual, I agree with Beagle. I have two awesome baritones in my high school group right now, and they have done everything from Jesus and Lamar in Godspell to Charlie and the high soloist in the opening in Brigadoon. One is definitely a tenor in training with a Josh Groban style voice, but the other is a bari with a few high notes. They are versatile, and trustworthy and very castable.

That is actually what a professional baritone range is
shadowdancer

Also it depends : Yes you may be able to sing a G or an A but can you sit up on the G and A for measures singing th edifferent lurics. I for one am a baritone. I can sing an A no problem. However if a song is A after A after A or even starts with an A, I am screwed

Actually, I can go on in my upper register for quite some time...in secret garden most of my songs where up around E-G...

How old are you? You may still be changing into a tenor or you are more then likely a lyric Baritone

if im being honest... although i can hit top c, its not consistent. consistent would be the Bb. downwards i can again hit low c (3 octaves below) but since its not consistent... my low note is Eb, giving me about 2 and a half octaves to play with. im most comfortable between the f below middle c and the f above, hence i would say im probably baritone. my teacher thinks so anyway... hopefully i am

Tenors get the roles
Baritones get the girls
Basses get to be the foundation?

Tenors: Are like drummers. You see them in bands all the time but can never find one when you need one.
Baritones: Are like Guitar players. Everyone plays guitar so no ones impressed unless you are talented and they hear how good you are.
Basses: When boys are young everyone want to be the manly bass.

Tenors: Are feminem
Bartitones: Are Hopeless romantics
Basses: Manly men

Tenors: Are Divas
Baritones: Do all the hard work for less glory.
Basses: Get an easy line but always complain about it.

Tenors: Are like trumpets, loud and always think there the most important part of the band.
Baritones: Are like swiss army knives. Jack of all trades master of none.
Basses:are like Umpa lumpas, Awkward and always march to there own tune.

Im voting Baritone mainly because I am biased. But I will say to mainy guys who think they are baritones you must have the warmth to be a true bari.
Matthew

I don't agree with some of the tenor steroetypes.
But they were funny.
DaddyDiesel

Its mostly resentment. Very Happy

Jokes:

How do you know when there is a group of basses at your doorstep?

What's the difference between a soprano and a corvetter?

How many Tenors does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Answers:
They never know when to come in

most baritones haven't been in a corvette.

4. 1 to screw it in and 3 to bitch about how much higher they can sing than the one who did
DaddyDiesel

Nice!! Good jokes. I thought you going to say......

How many sopranos does it take to screw in a light bulb?

1 she just holds it up and thinks that the world will revolve around her.

Lol, the version of this one that I've heard is:
Q: How do you know if a soprano is at the front door?
A: She can't find her key. Laughing

AND some other one of my favorites:
Q: What do you call a soprano who can sight-read?
A: An alto.

Q: How many sopranos does it take to change a light bulb?
A: One to climb the ladder, and the rest to complain about how high it is.

Q: What do you call two sopranos singing in perfect unison?
A: A minor second.

LOL, I love music jokes.
Matthew

What does an alto use for birth control?

Her personality.
norayouadora

^Lol, touché. But you could say that about any person that you don't like... It's not really a "music" joke. For example,

Q: What can you say about three tenors neck-high in cement?
A: "Not enough cement!"

But it doesn't matter; I'm not really an alto anyways. Speak to the hand Hehe.
Matthew

Crying or Very sad i really am a tenor...

why do baris take all the women to bed?

because the tenors already took each other...
theatrefanatic

I think I'm a baritone and I go to an F. In my school If you can sing higher than a G then your in the tenor section.
norayouadora

^LOL, futureMUNGOJERRIE. Love you. Laughing

Since you really are a tenor, I'll edit the joke:

Q: What can you say about three tenors neck-high in cement?
A: "Good lord! What is all of this cement doing in here? For God's sake, someone SAVE THE TENORS!!!"

Yes I know Laughing Though I do like high notes, I always love singing an octave lower than everyone; belt it out like Caiaphas - it's so satisfying (as, I am sure, high notes are). We sing in a fantastic old Chapel that seats 800 of us and hour school is notorious around the surrounding counties for its excellent singing, so when I and my friend next to me belt out the bass, it's nice to hear the reverberations.

I have been saying for years that I'm coming back as a tenor. I don't even have to be a good tenor, just a tenor who can walk. Laughing
