For all of her intelligence, Mrs. Lovett is fairly dim!Dear "Sweeney Todd" Fans,SPOILER ALERT! For all of her intelligence, Mrs. Lovett is fairly dim-witted! I mean, I know that she didn't want to "get her hands dirty" by purposely killing Lucy when Benjamin Barker was sent away, but she's had to contend with a crazy woman ever since! Even though the beggar woman might not be Lucy, Mrs. Lovett has to behave as though she IS Lucy, so that she can keep the woman away from Sweeney Todd, just in case she really IS Lucy. Any truly intelligent, scheming "pie lady" would certainly have found a way to keep from having to be so paranoid about Lucy Barker. I mean, she has to tell Toby to "throw the old woman out" about 3 times during one song! Thanks in advance for your replies. |

I don't understand what you mean by:
I personally don't believe Lovett contributed to Lucy's...attempted suicide..at all. |

Umm...she knows the whole time that the Beggar Woman is Lucy...there wasn't any guessing about it. |

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Lovett knew Lucy tried to poison herself and failed. That's why she told Sweeney Lucy died--so she could have him to herself--and chased the Beggar Woman off all of the time.
...although you do have a bit of a point: Lovett doesn't seem squeamish about gore, so you'd think she'd kill Lucy rather than just chase her around. Plot device, Mr. Frodo! Plot device! |

Of course Lovett knew about the Beggar Woman that's almost the whole point of the twist, lol. | ||||

I don't think Mrs. Lovett would've found trouble in throwing Lucy's carcass in the oven ("Quick! Into the oven!") but I don't think she would have had the guts to kill her. Mrs. Lovett didn't actually do any of the killing. She did the disposing. |

True, but she never really seemed disturbed by the gore or any of that, once she knew the death benefitted her. I just figured pushing somebody in to the oven would be run of the mill for her, LOL! But again: plot device! |

I'll tell you ONE way she's dim.
If she hadn't freaked out when Sweeney approached the Beggar Woman's body ("No! Don't go near her!") but had instead stayed calm ("I'll handle that one, love, you take care of the Judge") maybe she could have got away clear! |

EXACTLY. But I dunno, if you had convinced a crazy blood-hungry barber that his wife was dead and you were faced with the possibility of him finding out, given to human nature, you'd probably freak too. |
