Not that I don't like pictures of food, but....WTF? I don't get it | ||

It shows the box and than what the actual food looks like...usually disgusting.
My mom had my sister and I watch this really neat thing on advertising when we were younger so we could understand how the media effects us. They put soap in coffee (to make pretty little bubbles) on TV and often use lard to make scoops of ice cream because you can dye it easily and it makes lovely little scoop that doesn't melt. Would be a fun job! |

Just so you know - the lard/ice cream connection still holds true, but they aren't allowed to put anything inedible in food advertising anymore. The FCC rulings have changed on that with the big Truth in Advertising movement. It's kind of funny - yes, you can make ice cream out of lard because while no one in their right mind WOULD eat it, you COULD eat it... I did a commercial for Little Caesar's from the food production end, since I happened to both be involved in making commercials at the time, AND was manager of the training store for Little Caesar's. We made 12 pans of medium doughs (144) to choose three that were photogenic enough to show at the beginning of the commercial. We beat out a couple dozen more, and sheeted a couple dozen so they could choose the prettiest roundest ones. Then we spent hours arranging the ingredients. Hours. Spraying them with veggie oil if they got dull, bringing them sips of water (just kidding!!) But it was a 12 hour shoot to make a half hour pizza for a 1 minute commercial. It was grueling. |

All of the soups look like vomit.
A Health professor once showed us a very interesting Dateline documentary on the food industry. It was a real eye opener. Before that, I had no idea that a very large percentage of processed foods out there are mostly composed of the same essential ingredients. They are merely packaged and flavored in different ways as to make them seem unique. I think something like 80% of supermarket products are made from corn syrup, or something. I forgot the rest of the ingredients, but they are used again and again simply because they are cheap and easy to mass produce. The unfortunate thing is most of these ingredients are major contributing factors to heart disease and obesity. There was also a section about food styling that showed the lard ice cream thing. They even hold a convention for food stylists every year. Notice how Cheerios proudly announces that it contains no cholesterol? Well, duh, of course it doesn't because cholesterol comes from animal products. Cheerios contains no animal products, nor do most other boxed breakfast cereals. The average consumer is oblivious to this and assumes Cheerios must be special. Also, some European countries have laws that prohibit food companies from advertising directly to children. That means you will never see a sugary kid's cereal commercial during cartoon hours on television in countries such as Sweden and Italy. Here, children are bombarded with enticing treats all day long. |
