First Audition

So, I just transfered to a new school this year, and I've finally decided that I'm going to get up my nerve and audition for the musical next week (and drag along my friend...in exchange, she's dragging me to a martial arts class.) The musical is Little Shop of Horrors.

The thing is, I've really never auditioned for a musical before. The closest I've come to being in one was a wacky version of the Wizard of Oz, which included lyrics such as "Birds that chirp in the trees/ pretty flowers and bumbles bees/ I'll feel it all as I dance in the breeze/ I wanna be the guy with all the heart." We went around the city performing for K-3rd graders.

So, needless to say, I'm nervous. I'm in chorus for the first time this year, but besides a week of Chorus and about 4 vocal lessons, I don't know how to sing. Appearently the for the audition we will have to read a portion of the script, and sing a bit of a song of our chosing which "shows off our range/ vocal ability/ etc." We were told we could sing Happy Birthday or Amazing Grace if we couldn't think of anything else.

Any suggestions for nerve-calmness in auditions/ how I should prepare? I'm lost, scared, and really want to get a part.

Re: First Audition

I was just in a similar predicament in June! The Secret Garden was my very first audition, but I actually got a lead role in the play. Research the show; watch the movie! LSOH has a movie, so you should watch it. Buy or borrow the soundtrack, and if you're auditioning for Audrey, listen to her songs especially. Study the show beforehand; if you can find a song that works with your character, use it! I've learned that. I used a song from High School Musical at my 'Garden' audition, but don't try that...but whatever you do, don't sing anything from Little Shop, Wicked, RENT, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, or Throughly Modern Millie, as they are way overdone. I've "Somewhere That's Green" (one of Audrey's songs) is a ballad (I've never seen the show or the movie) so you may want to sing a ballad for your audition. Of course, she has some uptempo songs, too (or so I've heard). You may want to ask on the Little Shop forums.

Teehee. Thanks! I'm glad you got the part! That's awesome.

I have actually been comtemplating watching the movie...we watched a bit in chorus, but I didn't know if it would be a bad idea, since the movie and show are so different (or so I hear.) I guess I better get the soundtrack, eh? I've listened to a few songs, but your idea's better Razz I think Audrey would be shooting for the moon, but I guess it's better to go into an audition with a character in mind no matter what...?

I was thinking of singing There's a Fine, Fine Line, because I'm super familiar with it...but I'm not sure. Or maybe Accident Waiting to Happen, because it's been stuck in my head forever Shocked Or perhaps I'll just go with Happy Birthday.../endrant

I am currently in little shop at the moment and playing ronette...Definately watch the film they are quite similar... at least the characters are ........we only have a cast of 11 because it is an adult production and only written for that number but if this is your first musical I would stick to being in the chorus and doing a good job ...learn some stage craft first beleive me it will stand you in good stead

I played Audrey in Little Shop last year and it is my favourite show to date. It's a quirky, fun, touching show and would be a great show for your first theatre experience.

As for your audition, just try and do your best, and let the card fall where they may. The poster who said to shoot for Chorus for first time is probably right, and becuase Little Shop has a small cast, the chorus roles are pretty prominent. However, always try to shoot for the moon becuase you never know! My first audition was a disaster, but I landed the lead role becuase they saw potential; however I do look back with some regret becuase I wish I had more experience before letting it all hang out on stage.

Anyway, try a song from Grease if your stuck for music, the music is fairly easy to learn (Look at Me I'm Sandra Dee) and the pop style will fit in well with Little Shop.

Break a leg!
