Fire!?!?!?!?This may have been asked before, but I couldn't find it...How do the candles in the 'lake' work? I know for a fact that there aren't THAT many holes in the stage floor. and How does Erik's fire-staff work?(after 'wishing you were somehow here again'). Is it real fire? (it might have been my imagination, but I swear I could feel heat!) p.s.... if anyone wants to explain to me the other confusing special effects, please do! |

There are that many holes in the stage deck...little trap doors. They sometimes sell the used or broken candle-trap covers at the Broadway Flea Market.
The candles fold down beneath the deck. If you see the candles up close, there is a tiny little prong next to the "flame" that pushes the the trap open. The flames are small bulbs. For the tour, the company brings its own deck to lay over the floor of the existing stage at whatever theatre they play...those theatres do not have the needed small traps in the floor. Going on memory here...so I might be off on a few details...but the fireballs from the skull staff are pellets of a papery material treated with a chemical that ignites when the Phantom presses a button to release them. What other effects are confusing you? |

The "heat wave" doesn't come from the scull staff, it comes from the flames that shoot up from the floor at the end of the scene - as does the smell... |

Thanks! that explains it, because I've been on the stage floor and I know that there aren't that many trap doors!
The other things that confused me were the magical lasso and how Erik 'disappears' at the end. I think that he pushes a false back out of the chair, lies down, and pulls a curtain down for the back of the chair and also to cover his legs. And I think the magical lasso was just a really stiff/solid rope that required Raoul to stand on his tiptoes and, well, act like he was hanging. Am I somewhere close to right? and the smell was... well, you know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

You're more or less right about the chair. The back is false...once he covers himself, he slides himself back into a box-like section in the back of the chair. If someone were to sit down on the chair after the cloak is pulled off, they'd be sitting on his lap.
The magical lasso isn't stiff. There's a fine wire at the top end of it that runs up into the flies to keep it pulled upright. The wire is released when the Phantom "burns" through the rope to let Raoul go. The only smell that stands out for me is below the stage. It's rather bad-smelling down there. |

Oh! that makes sense about the lasso!
Paula, you said you were going on memory... were you in it ?!?!?!? I think that something (like a hair) was accidentally caught in the fire, and that's why it smelled bad. but I don't really know!!!! |

I've just been interested in it for years, have seen it a lot, and know Hugh Panaro. So I've picked up a lot of random details.
Ick...singed hair or wigs can smell pretty bad...that brings back memories of science class pranks. And those wigs do get singed from time to time. |

For almost three years now. Met him while he was still playing The Phantom and ended up running a web site for him. He's a sweetheart.
It was my hair, too. I volunteered a few locks after we ran out of tennis balls. |

You know, there are children in other countries who don't get punctuation every day. Why won't someone think of the children? |

If only there was a way to delete the overuse of punctuation, some sort of button... |

He went to my high school's ...um...brother? school I guess you would call it. I did a chorale concert there. ....but I don't know him. Just throwing that out there. |

Well, I get pretty emotional about phantom. If only there were an emoticon that said, "That makes me so happy/excited that I almost want to cry!" I'll have to make one... btw... I'm 14, so I'm pretty easily set into a giggle fit! Most of the time I know how dumb it is to laugh, but it's just so much fun! |
