Finally, I've got an opportunity!

I finally got an opportunity to serve as a volunteer in a local theatre production company in Singapore!

Over the last 6 months, I have sent them 2 emails stating that I'm seeking an opportunity to be a part of a production company and they never got back to me. Yesterday, I made a prayer and emailed them by faith for the 3rd time, and they finally replied today. Asking me for a description of my past experiences as well as what role I like to volunteer for!

O! Thank God for such an opportunity! Yes! It's finally coming to past! Next year, I shall be pursing my diploma in theatre first, then get on a fast track for honors programme, we'll see how things go!

Wow that is a GREAT opportunity! What all will you be doing there as a volunteer??
JIJane

Good for you. Smile I know the scene a bit, I grew up in KL for 6 years in the 80's and 90's and my parents lived in Singapore until 2006....so went back there regularly and also trained with a Singaporean girl in MT at my drama school in the UK. You may know her, she is called Emma Yong and has done a lot of theatre in Singapore I believe. Anyway, what exactly is it that you are aspiring to do? Do you want to stay in Singapore or branch out to Europe/ the US?
MrMusical1982

Frankly, I like to explore the States and UK, and many other parts of the world, but ultimately to learn and adapt ideas from all over the world and bring it back to Singapore.

I can do stage acting, I'm fine with that, but if you ask me, I prefer script writing, directing and producing. I love working with the set, working with all the casts and crews. I aspire to have my very own Global Platform Theatre Production right here in Singapore.

Well, I'm not exactly sure of what I'm going to be doing as a volunteer at the Singapore Repertory Theatre, but I have expressed interests in 3 specific areas, which the lady has asked me for, Stage Management (any part of it), stage acting, or script writing (even if it's just to be part of the group to help generate creative ideas).

These are the 3 areas that I'm specifically better at.

Quite frankly, I'm 25 this year, turning 26 in September. And I want to fulfill my destiny before I reach 30. If not for parental objections years ago, I will have gone for my Honors programme in theatre a long time back. Well, the past don't matter anymore, what's important is what happens from now on!

Ever thought of training in the UK/US or is it too financially crippling? If you want to have your own production company then you are right to want to explore all aspects of the theatre from stage management to script writing, etc. You will also need a good sense of business. Don't condemn your first degree and your parents. They have a point. You are definitely not too old to start behind the scenes in theatre and the industry now and if it doesn't happen - you have your IT stuff to fall back on. Seems to me like you are in the perfect position and at least you are not going into the industry with a £20,000 debt like so many young UK actors and stage management grads.

It's good to be ambitious and have specific goals but building a new production company takes times. I know someone who is currently doing this in London, is 33 and a trained actor who has done West End leads. And it is still tough for him, especially getting all the finances together. Don't feel old and most of all - don't feel like you need to have achieved everything by a certain age. After all, what would you do for the next 50 years after that? Wink
MrMusical1982

Well, age will definitely not be able to stop me. Well, I guess the reason why I mentioned 30 is because this desire inside me, has been held in for so long, I just feel the sense of urgency to start things moving. Yes, I have definitely thought of pursuing my Honors programme and trust me, I'm aiming for nothing but the best.

In fact, I have set my eyes on a few of the best Degree programmes in the world that provides the best practical teachings and coaching in Theatre. Yes, it's true that capital is important. And I belief more important than having the capital is the desire, drive, motivation, as well as network. With the right network of people, anything can be done.

It doesn't mean that it'll be easy to achieve, but at least, when I need something, I know who I can approach. Starting my own theatre production is not the only thing I want to do, I also have a deep desire to start a specialized School for the Performing Arts in Singapore. Oh, just the thought of it lights up my heart and soul!

Well, haha...for the next 50...60...70 years, I'm going to dedicate my entire lifetime here on earth to theatre production and providing others with the opportunity to pursue their destinys and dreams!

"With the right network of people, anything can be done."

That is very true. I wish you all the best of luck! Very Happy
MrMusical1982

Thank you so much 'JIJane'!

I know the road ahead is going to be a great adventure awaiting me! And I'm going for it with smiles all over my face!

I've arrived at the point in my life when choices have to be made and never to look back ever again!

Yes, IT might be something I can fall back on, but I dun belief I'm called to be a fantastic IT programmer. I belief being an IT programmer is only a stage in life that I have to pass through that will bring me into my calling and destiny in life.

Frankly, I will never ever want to do IT again in my life. There is a time and season for everything. And the season of IT programming will soon be over for me.
