Fiddler - Fyedka

Hi all,

I was thinking of auditioning for Fyedka in fiddler on the roof. Anyone had experience with this character and does anyone have any audition tips?

My general tips for any audition are listed in the "So you want help with an audition?" thread in this board.

Have you read the Fiddler script? Seen the movie? Listened to the CD? These are all things you must do.

Do you have to select your own song to sing for the audition? Do you have to bring a monologue or will you be cold reading?

Marymag is right baout everything except watching the film.

Never watch another production before you audition or perform a role.

There is a lot of debate over whether or not you should see other productions of a show you're going to be in. I used to be on the side that said you shouldn't watch other productions. then I changed my mind. I think seeing other productions, especially wellknown movies such as Fiddler, is an important part of role research. I honestly think people may chuckle if you show up to a Fiddler audition and say you've never seen the movie. It's just one of those things, I think, that if you're into musical theater, people will expect you to have seen.

That being said, however, I think I understand why people say you shouldn't see other productions of something you're going to be in. They say this because it is believed that CONSCIOUSLR or SUBCONCIOUSLY, YOU WILL COPY WHAT THE ACTOR PORTRAYING YOUR PART ALREADY DID. I do agree that even if you are a very seasoned actor, you may still subconciously copy some of what the actor did, or think that his way of playing it was best.

So, I would watch the movie, but only after you have a clear idea of how you want to play Fyedka. If you don't think you have a strong enough idea of who Fyedka is and think you may just end up copying the actor in the movie, forget the movie.
