FIDDLER AUDITIONS...

My schools musical this year is going to be fiddler, and i am going to audition....but, i have no idea what to sing. I have a pretty okay range...from G below middle C to about an E or F above the high C...I like belting, but Id like to show a range. My dream role is Golde, but since I'm only a freshman, I'm hoping for Chava, or Hodel. Also, we cold read in pairs for auditions (we get to pick our partners though) Does anyone have advice for that?

I Feel Pretty from West Side Story, Getting to Know You from The King and I, or My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music would all be good.

When cold reading, make sure that the page is not covering your face. It should be a few inches below your chin (Basically, as far from your face as you can). Make sure to look away from the page as often as possible and try to mark the page with your thumb, if possible. And don't be afraid to move around and interact with the other person, even if they are looking at their script.

Cold reading only gets better with practice. Honestly, I would take a play that I haven't read and find a two person scene and practice reading it back and forth with a friend. Or even picking up a book and alternate reading paragraphs.

As for song choice, stick with the classics on this one...L&L (MFL/Camelot/Etc.), R&H, etc. (Even a song from Guys and Dolls wouldn't be so bad)...

Hope that helped!

I totally sang 'I Feel Pretty' for my Fiddler audition, Candigirl. Great minds think alike, I spose. I got Hodel. And her highest note is an E5, and she is the highest singer of the sisters. Actually, probably the sister that does the most singing.
Anyway, best of luck.

I used "Simple Little Things" from 110 in the shade and got called back for Hodel, but I din't get the part because I was a freshman and my school rarely gives roles to unknown freshman, earlier the same year I played Tzeitel for a different company. Some good choices for songs would be "Shy" for Chava, and maybe "Cockeyed Optimist" from South Pacific. For Hodel most of the classics would be good. For the cold reading just be in character and don't be afraid to take risks. As for the characters, Hodel is more of a light, pretty soprano voice, and chava is belty, and golde and tzeitel are in between , they should be a solid mixed voice (be glad you've got a MAN at the end of tzeitel's part of matchmaker can sound awful if belted..lol I've tried) I'd go for Golde becuase that's what you want, but keep Chava or the other daughters in mind. for Fiddler it really depends on how old/mature you look relative to the other people auditioning. I would also look at Yente, who is a smaller character but extremely funny and who, besides Tevye, gets most of the laughs. one other thing is that Golde and Yente work best with a Yiddish/Eastern European accent so if you know how to do that it's a plus. The daughter sometimes have this accent and sometimes don't, it's up to the director! GOOD LUCK! doing Fiddler is such a wonderful experience!

I don't really see any of these roles really being belted. Yente's a character voice anyways, even when singing. Golde I've always thought of as being a very legit singinger-Sabbath Prayer, Sunrise Sunset. Matchmaker I guess you could do a mixed belt with that...but I don't really see where you get Chava as being belty, as she really only sings a little in Matchmaker. I think overall this show works best when you just sing, with your legit voice and you don't force it to be anything its not.

sorry what I meant is Chava CAN be belty, and Golde is mostly legit, becuase of the style of her songs. One of the productions I was in the Chava's were both Belters..it wasn't very good but that's the only character that someone who can only BELT could play, vocally. I personally prefer all the singers to be legit for Fiddler..but if someone doesn't have a legit voice they could be chava, as long as they don't have like a rock and roll voice, and can mix ok. Sorry there was miscommunication.
Cake_in_Song

The only belty role I see in Fiddler is Yente.

And even she's not real belting. Its more of a speak singing, character voice, as she's an older woman.

if i loved you from carousel is an amazing story telling song. it might be a good choice if you're going for Hodel.

I won't shoot you, but I might give you slightly evil glances every now and then. Mad

j/k

I think this is one of those shows that you love once you do it.
lolliball91

actually, i liked the show before i did it. now i dont like it.
haha um,
i think that hodel can be a belter.
but i think the rest of them need to be legit, and with yente its more of a character voice, i wouldnt call it belting.

Far From The Home I Love would sound pretty awful belted...she DEFINITELY needs to be legit.
lolliball91

i've heard it belted.
i liked it.
But it was just me.
IwantheGoldenTicket

i think that if you want to go for hodel you shouldn't do a belted song.

Quite a few people have said that Golde is not a belter, but can someone elaborate on that for me? I can imagine that the role would need more of a legit sound in "Sabbath Prayer" and "Sunrise, Sunset," but what about "Do You Love Me?" (some parts of it) and "The Dream"? And what about mixing? Would it be at all possible for a belter to successfully sing Golde's part?

Sorry for all the questions, but my school is doing this show next year, as well, and I really want to be Golde. Anyone who can answer even one of those questions is my hero! Lol. Mr. Green

Do You Love Me, is definitely not belted. You might chose to almost speak some parts "You're a fool!" "I'm your wife!", but its not really belted, at least not in a traditional sense. It could be possible for a belter to sing Golde's part if you lighten your belt or possibly mix. Or do it as a little bit of a character voice I suppose. I'd suggest listening to the OBC recording.

Yeah, I have the OBCR and I've listened to it a few times, but in some parts it seems like Golde is belting... Or at least it doesn't sound like legit singing to me. Like you said, it's not necessarily belting in a traditional sense, but it's not like she's a delicate soprano type, either. I'm definitely no expert on types of vocals, etc, but I'm having trouble figuring out what kind of voice she should have, since I'm usually a belter and I want to know what I can do to better sing the part. What kind of character voice do you recommend?

I think the sound you're hearing is more the old style of broadway singing. Its legit, its just not pretty legit. Its definitely not belting. It seems like she's almost speaking on pitch at times. Remember, she's a middle aged, Russian-Jewish woman.
