It depends on your show. Really the star is Tevye, and then there are several strong supporting female characters. Golde is a large female role as are Tzeital, Hodel, and Chava. Depending on the production one may or may not stand out above the rest.

If you look at a listing of the characters it lists Tevye as the only Lead with Golde, the daughters and the suitors as supporting, most of the rest as cameos. Based on lines, stage time and singing it's really close between Golde, Tzeitel and Hodel.

Personally I'd wanna say Golde and then Hodel. It's VERY close though. In order of the entire cast it would even be:
Tevye
Golde
Hodel
Perchik
Tzeital
Motel

Golde is the female lead. Yente is considered the 2nd most.
Norma Crane was nominated for Best Actress as Golde as was Maria Karnoliva.

Yes, Golde is definitely the female lead. I know because I played her and earned my right to go around bragging that I was the female lead.
