I always just pretend that I'm at home, singing by myself. That way, I don't notice everyone around me, and I can just sing.

practice singing in front of people before your audition, first just try with your parents or siblings, or maybe some friends. it'll be easier to get comfortable around people you know well.

i think that really depends on the person i'm fine with singing onstage: mostly b/c i can get into it enough that its my character expressing emotion awesomely (ie thru song, lol) and not me trying to sing; also the fact that the stage lights make it almost impossible to make out anyone in the audience if you didnt want to, and the fact that you dont know a lot of the ppl, so who cares what they think? personally i find it harder to sing in front of ppl i know b/c i want to please them more than random ppl i dont know. sorry that was a random rant:oops: anyway, practice is the best, and getting hyped up--i find its really easy to do stuff that would be normally embarrasing if im being crazy and hyper, lol |

As you know, singing is a lot of fun,
and no one expects you to sound like a diva just sing with joy, and the joy will come through and the listeners will feel it! |

i read somewhere that in auditions you should tell yourself that whatever happens doesn't matter. if you get a good role (i'm sure you will!) great! if not, don't sweat it. there'll be other chances!

This is actually very good advice. I started doing that myself about a year and a half ago (instead of going in with the old "oh please please please please like me and cast me" attitude). Once I truly adopted that attitude with auditions, I started getting a lot more role offers. Coincidence? |

I find that the more time I have to rehearse my song the better I do. For my very first CT audition I had to sing in front of 70+ people and it was nerve racking. I used a piece that I had known for years and psyched myself up by telling myself that "I'm going to be great, I'm going to nail it!" It worked. I did not get the role, but I did get a call back (sadly I lost all of my confidence during it) and the role went to a professional actress, however I found out later that I was next in line for the role and I did manage to get a small solo |

I'd rather sing for 1000 strangers or even...random aquaintences (i.e., people from school) than 4 of my closest friends. granted, i dont mind singing for anyone, i love it...but if i had to choose, it is much easier for me with the random people i dont know. |

AMEN. Although I am getting better, I sometimes sing when my mum and sister are around. |

When it comes to being nervous, at least for auditions, be sure you know the song your singing. Not only the words and notes, but the context, so you can portray song more accurately. Also, be sure to get enough sleep the night before so you won't be all jittery and find yourself falling asleep waiting for your turn. Tell yourself you will get the part, that you are the best these people will see. When I auditioned for the part of Raoul for POTO's Las Vegas show, I had a slight thought in my mind 'I know I'm not going to get this. There's obviously people better than me.' If I hadn't thought that, I might have been casted, or at least gotten a call back, if not for that part, then for the ensemble. At least I got to see a different side of NYC. Just have fun and enjoy yourself, that is key. If anything else, have a pianist play the song for you and record it, so you can have something to sing to. If you don't make it, don't tear yourself up over it.

A few years ago I was scared of singing infront of people too. But once I did it I was fine after that. I didn't care who I sang infront of. The first time you sing infront of people will be nerve-racking, but after that you'll be fine.
Also, just picture yourself in your bedroom as you sing. You'll be a lot more relaxed. Good luck! By the way, I too prefer singing infront of strangers than friends and family. |

If you need a "less intimidating" way to get started, I would suggest finding a karaoke track to a song you know and like, and singing/recording it on your computer. Once you have a recording you're pleased with (or at least semi-pleased with, lol)... then... THEN, let someone listen to it. You can use that as a springboard for doing more. People are usually always willing to give advice, such as how to make the song better, or which song suits your voice best if you present them with a few songs. Good luck. |

I think it just takes practice and guts to keep doing it even if you feel uncomfortable. That's how you learn is to keep putting yourself out there and then you will start to get more comfortable.
The other thing is to acknowledge that you are a good singer -- own it. You tell youself, I *am* a good singer and you show off how good you are and enjoy your own performance. Get into the lyrics, and have a good time -- don't *try* to have a good time, *have* one. Have fun. |

Be confident and know you can do this!
although I must admit I am scared to sing anywhere anymore because I recorded myself yesterday, and I sounded awful. |
