Definitely 'Christmas Bells.'

Christmas Bells
...Although I'm STILL bitter that they cut out half of "GoodBye Love" |
||||
| LittleMissCenterStage |
Yeah, I like that other half of Goodbye Love, too. Christmas Bells and We're Okay, too. I also get mad whenever they speak a lyric. UGH. |
||||
| Gwen |
Christmas Bells. Definately.
| LittleGavroche |
The second half of "Goodbye Love" is definitely my favorite lyrics in the whole show. The relationship between Mark and Roger is my favorite, and could have been expanded so much more.
| Luc |
Oooh, what about Voice Mails? I always loved Mark's Mom's voice mail. It really drove me crazy hearing it spoken... same with all of the other parts that were spoken, like the beginning of "You'll See" and things like that. It was ssssoooo weird hearing it that way!
But, my favorite would be Contact. I love the song, but it wouldn't translate well to the screen, and plus they wanted a 14A rating... if Contact was in there, it would have definitely been 18A. (I don't know what the ratings are titled across the globe, but in Canada, 14A means you have to be 14 years old to see it, and 18A means you have to be 18 or be with someone that's 18 to see it.) |

Christmas Bells - We're Okay - Happy New Year. i cant pick just one!
however, Im hoping one day they'll release a special edition of some sort that'll put the rest of "Goodbye Love" in the film... as well as 'My cat fell' from the deleted scenes. |
||||

omg chirstmas bells is awesome but my abesolute favourite that was cut from the movie was basically all of the finale! i aesolutely LOVE that, it has a little bit of everything, christmas bells, tune ups, santa fe, light my candle, goodbye love tunes and i should tell you tunes. i loved it live, for some reason just the tune up from that part makes me emotional...dont ask.
| norayouadora |
I would also definitely have to say "Christmas Bells." I didn't know that this song was cut from the movie when I went to see it, and it was SUCH a big disappointment.
But there are so many songs/sung parts that they cut that I absolutely love, so it's hard to pick. Aaah I hate the Rent movie, lol. |
||||
| MimixxRenthead |
Cristmas bells.
Me and my friend went to see it a week after it came out ((It was sold out every time we tried to get tickets)) and when we realized they didn't put Christmas bells in, we threw things at the screen and almost go kicked out.... |
||||
| Kaaatrina |
Christmas Bells.
When I heard it wasn't in the movie I got depressed. Hah. |
||||
| blue wind |
"goodbye love" and "halloween"
i love christmas bells, but i feel like it works way better on stage than it ever would in a movie...in a movie it would just seem random and weird. |
||||
| Pannic |
Christmas Bells, by a landslide.
| Asha |
Halloween, though it was in the DVD bonus features...
AND GOODBYE LOVE!!! It broke my heart when it wasn't there!!! |
||||
| Mango |
I wish they had put Halloween in the movie. I had wanted "Goodbye Love" to be in there, too, but after watching it in the Bonus Features, I changed my mind.
| 2Day4u2morrow4me |
I love Halloween and the Voice Mails. I hate the movie but I have to admit I saw the movie before the show and I was a movie fan but now I don't like movie fans and I can't call myself a Renthead because I've only seem the show 10 times so I call me self a Rent Asshole.
| HarmonicSoul |
I love "Halloween" and the second half of "Goodbye Love". "Christmas Bells" is also really awesome when done on stage.
I pretty much mentioned what everyone else did. XD |
||||
| LittleGavroche |
The second half of "Goodbye Love," by far. Without it, half of Mark and Roger's relationship was gone. And it gives so much more meaning to "What You Own."
| Kaaatrina |
I agree. It makes the story so much easier to follow. |
||||
| Luc |
It was so weird hearing some of it spoken! Like, the voicemail from Mrs. Cohen, and the little scene with Mark, Roger, and Benny near the beginning... during the movie I was like "Okay... even if you haven't heard the OBCR you MUST notice that they are rhyming here..." |
||||
| Kaaatrina |
And the whole scene right before Over the Moon... I found that to be completely awkward. |
||||
| musicalmaniac396 |
Mine is Tuneup#2. I also like the Voicemails as well.
| Y0UCANTST0PTHEBEAT |
Contact. | ||||
| ClockworkFox |
Second half of Goodbye Love. I cry every time I hear it. I identify too much with both those characters, so their exchange there just hurts. I've only seen the portion they cut from the movie, but it really, really hurts.
| ktp68 |
Christmas Bells. Though I have absolutely NO idea how it could translate to the screen - my eyes were basically whipping all over the place at the show. But still. Character development all over.
| *BroadwayLights* |
"You Okay, Honey?" is my fave. |
||||
| tragre6945 |
The second half of Goodbye Love and Christmas Bells are tied for that position.
| reedzee |
Christmas Bells/Second half of Goodbye Love as well.
| bwayobsessed |
You Okay Honey? It's just so sweet, I just have to smile everytime I hear it.
| Brock07 |
Christmas Bells, especially the part between Collins and Angel. So beautiful. Sometimes I just listen to that part and skip the rest of the song.
I also love the voice mails. They make me laugh everytime. |
||||

You Okay Honey? and Christmas Bells are the two songs that I wish were in film. The first thing I did when I got the DVD was look for the deleted scene's and see if they were on there but they weren't.
| jetblack_diva |
I was so angry it came to that part in the movie and i started screaming profanities! I was so angry! My mother had never seen the show and was getting really ticked off cuz i was yelling at the television! If you haven't guessed yet GoodBye Love is one of my favorite songs! It says so much without actually singing it. |
||||
| lilmissbroadway |
Halloween, Christmas Bells, Tune Up #1 and Full Goodbye Love are my favorites right now. I agree the song-into-dialouge was very awkward.
| Philphaba |
Same as i am a guitarist i love the tuneups haha! I also agree the voicemails in the movie should have been sang. I really love "You Okay Honey?" |
||||

Christmas Bells | ||||
| jetblack_diva |
I was so mad! I started screaming at the tv because the cut that song my mom had never seen the movie and was flipping out on me because she couldn't hear what they were saying I am most def. still bitter! |
||||

1. Christmas Bells
2. Happy New Year (A & B) 3. Goodbye Love |
||||
| kaplonski |
The second half of Goodbye Love and Halloween.
The lyrics of Goodbye Love just rip at me, because I've had goodbye conversation similar to that...sans AIDS but still. I was pissed when it wasn't there. And I just love Halloween. Again, the lyrics mean a lot to me; I've had more than my fair share how "How did I get here" moments and "Will it mean that it's the end, and I'm alone?" moments. So. Yeah. But I was (almost) satisfied with the deleted scenes. Almost. |
||||
| Mungojerrie_rt |
We're OK
Happy New Year Christmas Bells Goodbye Love You OK Honey? Basically anything that was cut. In the deleated scenes on the DVD the commentary for Goodbye love says why it was cut. Apparently the way it worked with emotional buildup throughout the movie didn't work the same as on stage so by the end people were blasaie(sp?) about the emotion. I don't see it though. |
||||
| krisavalon |
I made the mistake of buying the cheap version DVD, and not the special edition, so to this day I have never seen the movie version of Goodbye Love, and it's one of my favorite songs in the whole show. I was furious that they left it out of the final cut.

Halloween (And the second half of Goodbye Love. I ;love it so much, and it's my favourite piece of Mark/Roger interaction.)
| striped_mark_scarf |
My favourite song is either Goodbye Love or Halloween, so naturally they were left out of the movie. The huge argument at the beginning of Goodbye love is somewhat intact but Roger and Mark's "conversation" was left out (along with the whole Mimi and Roger thing), which really bothers me. That bit (I thought) was vital to how we see Mark and Roger's characters and their relationship!!!!!!!!! Luckily, they are both on the second disk, but the "conversation" is spoken
| lexell-cassini |
The scene when starts to snow is not too much charming without singing. Same with the New Years scene.
| fjays |
All of them But most of all, Christmas Bells. Shame. |
||||
| sylvesterm11 |
It would have been total madness. But total amazingness. |
||||
| Jman383 |
Hahaha, I dunno why, but I just died laughing at this. But you're absolutely right! |
||||
| Disney-Bway27 |
I WANT CHRISTMAS BELLS.
Sigh. FAIL on Columbus' part. |
||||
| What you own |
Ditto. When I first saw heard Christmas Bells I was thinking wait this is not in the movie right? Since it's not on my CD (I saw the whole movie after I saw the show.)The funny thing is I kept wondering how in the world they woul ever do that song on stage. But i could prefectly see it in my head as a movie number. |
||||
| Mazz |
Me too, it wouldn't take THAT much more effort than anything else to film.
| PeggySeldon |
I missed all the tune ups. They really set the tone before the song "Rent" starts.
| Mazz |
I miss the script. | ||||
| jackissensational |
Goodbye Love
Rosario could have pwned this song, too. The lyrics aren't amazing, but the way I see it, perhaps that's all Mimi could manage in that moment. I would have translated well to film, too. |
||||
| Disney-Bway27 |
^ You've seen the deleted "Goodbye Love" scene, right? The song was on the soundtrack, too. It was pretty well done. And Rosario DID pwn it.
| fjays |
Yeh they filmed all of Goodbye Love, and it was pretty good..
But Chris Columbus was like "It was just too emotional already after Angel died, we didn't want to overpower the audience, so we cut it" And I'm like Grrrrrrrr |
||||
| Brother Marvin Hinten, S. |
Now that the film didn't get such a large audience numbers-wise, I'll bet that now he's wondering if it would have made that big a difference.
| Disney-Bway27 |
Okay, so who else prefers the alternate ending vastly compared to the current one?
| Sphynx |
I like both endings, although I do perfer the alternate.
To answer the thread's question - hands down, Christmas Bells |
||||
| What you own |
God yes!!! I like both. But I love the fact they wind back up on stage. Right where they started....Both at the begging of the movie and st the begging of RENT. It's like acknowling the fact yes where a movie... but you can also see us on stage! |
||||
| Vice |
Me. *raises hand* ASDF, CHRISTMAS BELLS. I F**KIN' LOVE THIS SONG NOW. |
||||
| OJD234 |
Happy New Year!!
And. I like the ending of RENT how it is, and how the last shot is Angel, fading, but the alternate ending was also BEYOND amazing. |
||||
| STRWBRRY |
Christmass bells
And I prefer the alternate ending. When you see Angel walk by and grabbing Collins hand for just a second... <3<3<3 |
||||
| GabrielleLaRue |
The other half of Goodbye Love and Halloween and I like Christmas Bells, too.
| Disney-Bway27 |
I prefer the alternate ending SO much more than the original ending, mainly because it's probably the only part of the movie closest to the original stage musical. It's the same premise--the cast on stage singing with a hole where Angel would be, and then he walks out to end the show.
It WORKS! |
||||
| Jess046 |
Meh, I don't really think the alternate ending works. It does take you out of the scene, as C. Columbus explained on the commentary. I think because Mimi's near death scene is so emotional, we have to stay in that one scene to end the movie. It's a shame Angel isn't there with the cast at the end, though. But I much prefer to see everybody singing as one tight-knit unit in the end, rather then all of them on a big empty stage standing away from each other. Plus since Seasons of Love is essentially a flash forward to Angel's funeral- I wouldn't call it a full circle. And Angel coming back on stage only works in the theatre, because, well- it's the curtain call.
As for the original question, the biggest dissapointment for me was cutting out Goodbye Love and Halloween because both are pretty much Mark's character arc (and we all love Mark |
||||
| SianZena |
Oh yes, Mark is great I agree with you on these two. Wish they could have worked out a way to fit these scenes/songs in. |
||||
| Salome |
i found that turning some of the lyrics into dialouge greatly helped turn down the cheesiness factor of the show. |

Angels Part in Contact!! |
||||
| Please,Hello |
Christmas Bells and every voice mail.
| Jman383 |
Christmas Bells |
||||
| Damask and Dark |
"Christmas Bells," "Goodbye Love" (the whole song), and Angel's solo in the middle of "Contact," which I believe is a very important moment artistically and gives Angel's death more significance rather than having her silently fade away with no last burst of energy. I can understand cutting out the chanting parts of "Contact" though.
The voicemails/tune-ups are much cuter as originally done, of course, but I can understand how sung voicemails wouldn't work well in a movie. But the three I mentioned above could have been included, or worked in somehow. |
||||
| pixiedust |
I wish that they had kept in Halloween. It really adds something to Mark's character to have him admit that he's afraid of being left alone when all his friends are dead. I really think they should have kept it.
| Damask and Dark |
True. "Halloween" and Mark's argument with Roger in "Goodbye" love give Mark character development. Otherwise, he's pretty much the same throughout the show. |
||||
| songsinabox |
Christmas Bells, or at least something with the homeless people. IMO they were the best part of the show.
Apparently I heard rumours that Christmas Bells wasn't in the movie because Wilson Jermaine Heredia said it would take up a lot of filming time, or something like that. But I don't know if that's true, it was just a rumour. |
||||
| Damask and Dark |
That seems odd... I think on the Rent movie blog site WJH said during one of the video interviews that "Christmas Bells" was his favorite Rent song. Unless I'm remembering wrong. But if that rumor is true, shame on him!
|
||||
| AnnieWOO |
If I were in Chris Columbus' shoes I would have kept every song. Or tried to. Sure, it would probably have been too long and really wacky, but it would have been different. And isn't that what people think of RENT? And, it would've have just gotten "mixed reviews".
I would have to say Contact, that's my second favourite RENT song. That's absolutely gorgeous on stage...I mean when Angel sings. |
||||

Halloween/2nd half of goodbye love. i was really mad when i found out that they were deleted scenes

Christmas Bells without a doubt... and Voice Mail #5 |
||||
| Apples2for10 |
I'm probably in the minority here, but I think the movie works fine with all the songs that are included. The only song that kinda bugs me that was included is also my favorite: "You'll See". While it's my favorite, I almost feel like it didn't need to be in the movie. It feels like it's just kind of shoehorned in as an afterthought.
