Fairytale ObjectI know this would probably get more views in the MdN Social Club, but I'll post it here because it's all about fairy tales and I figured that ITW experts could help me here.
I'm writing a musical that is kind of like ITW (as in it's a whole bunch of fairy tales crammed into one plot). It's still in the early stage of the game, but I need some help.
The two main characters are Jack (Jack & the Beanstalk) and Dorothy (Wizard of Oz). Dorothy lands at Jack's house (b/c of the twister) and climbs the beanstalk with him, etc.
I want Jack to give an object to Dorothy that's from a fairy tale that is not from one of the following:
1) Jack and the Beanstalk
2) Wizard of Oz
3) Hansel and Gretl
4) Aladdin
The reason that I don't want the object to be from one of those stories are because I have used some part of those stories in some form in the show.
NOTE: The object has to be something that can fit in a pocket.
The reason that I want Jack to give something to Dorothy is because I want Dorothy to wake up in her bed (at the end of the show) and realize that everything was a dream, but I want her to find the object that Jack gave to her after she wakes up. I kind of want the audience to leave with their own ending to the show, as in, whether it was all a dream or if it actually happened.
Thanks in advance!
PS: I want everybody to know that I am NOT copying ITW at all. I actually finished the first draft before I knew ITW existed (I live a very sheltered life ). Everything in the script is totally original: it came from MY head, not Sondheim's!

It sounds pretty interesting......I'm not sure what the object could be, to me, it would depend on Jack's character and his reasons for giving her the object. If he just wanted her to hold on to it for him, if it was a gift, and it really meant something important to either of them, or just a random thing.
I know you said nothing from Wiz of Oz, but I can't help but remember for some weird reason the faerie tale about red shoes......What if he gave her the ruby (or diamond, depending on your verison, movie/book)shoes?But then again....it wouldn't fit in a pocket......
Sorry, I couldn't be of much help.

Actually, you were a big help in some form. Ohh...that sounds so mean. Thanks for your help!
So the reason Jack is giving her something is because he just wants her to always have a part of him with her. So it has to be something that a teenage boy would have to maybe give a very close friend that's a girl...but not a girlfriend who was moving away or something like that. So the diamond/rubie thing would not work because the average guy would not have that in his pocket. Okay, that was a bad example. Because, in my version, Jack lives In the Middle of No Where so it has to be something that Jack has that he maybe got from his mother or (deceased) father. I was thinking of the magic beans from the beanstalk. I think that would be kind of cool because the beanstalk is what leads J & D to "fairytale land" (that's not the actual name of it, but you know what I mean). Hmm....I'll have to think on it. Any more suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

What looking glass? I don't remember a looking glass, but I could be totally wrong, though.
I'm leaning towards the beans, but I don't know. And no one has to be sorry. I didn't explain it very well. It's really hard to explain it without posting the script....which would take forever, and since it's not copyrighted, has the risk of being stolen. Humph. What to do?

There was a mirror in the disney movie that Beast gave Belle.
So glad to be of some help! I was thinking that they find the shoes at the giant's house orginally.....
The beans are a good idea. I'm sorry, my dentist has been toturing me and I'm having a hard time fully concentrating right now.

No, you were right. It is in the movie and the Broadway version. Just, when you said "looking glass" I thought of a telescope-type thing. It's late, okay?!

Don't use the mirror - it's copyrighted to Disney. Here are some ideas:
Beauty and the Beast/Sleeping Beauty - rose (not used in the Disney way, of course, that's copyrighted )
Little Match Girl - matches
Princess and the Pea - pea
Snow White - comb, possibly apple
Shoes are very prominent in fairy tales - Snow White, The Red Shoes, Cinderella, The Wizard of Oz, Twelve Dancing Princesses, and Puss in Boots all make references to shoes in different ways. Maybe you could incorporate that?
Just be careful using things from Disney's Beauty and the Beast because chances are they're copyrighted. Also refrain from using Peter Pan or Harry Potter objects, because those are heavily copyrighted as well.
Good luck! It sounds very interesting.

Baker's right, I never considered that aspect. Ugh, that reminds me of something else that might be heavily copyrighted. Dorothy......wouldn't Wiz of Oz story be also copyrighted?

Nope, the rights for The Wizard of Oz have expired - it's now public domain, as long as you don't reference anything from the movie (ex. ruby slippers, having Dorothy wear the typical dress [find a different way to incorporate blue and white checks], etc.). Make sure that if you use the slippers, they are the silver as in the book, not ruby.

Aww, I forgot about copyrights.....

I think that the poor Wizard of Oz has been killed enough with Wicked and The Wiz. Perhaps you can choose a different combo of fairy tales.
Anyways, I think it would make the most sense if he gave her a piece of gold that he stole from the giant. You could sort of allude to Peter Pan by having him give her a thimble. Something small like that would be good.

I don't know how well this would work...but possibly a red hood

I thought of the whole Wiz/Wicked thing, but I think that I'm way too far ahead in the game now to change the whole plot.
But great idea about the gold!!! I think that's what I'll use! Thanks, everyone!

In the original Beauty and the Beast, Belle had a magic ring, rather than a magic mirror. That seems ideal.

I once tried to write the same kind of thing as your doing, but obviously you are more talented than me, because I failed miserably!! I'm curious though, are you making up your own songs, or using ones from pre-existing musicals?

Why cant he give her the golden egg? It makes sence for him to have that in his pocket.

THAT is a great suggestion! I'd go with the golden egg!

I thought of having Jack have her hold on to something and forgets to get it back from her and she finds it later, but apparently, Jack gives it to her as a gift so.....
Golden egg!The scene with a golden egg!Oh the memories of that scene. We could never get it done within 12 chimes of midnight without messing up .
