FaginDo you consider Fagin a supporting role?

Fagin is practically the lead!
Oliver may be the central character and Dodger and Nancy are also big parts but Fagin is in loads of scenes and if played really well can steal the show.
But I guess it depends on how you view the show.

It doesnt depend on how you do the show. Fagin is the lead role. The show is designed to lead up to his entrance. he has the most dialouge, most musical material and his relationship to Oliver Twist is central.
Oliver is the protaganist but in the musical his role is more of an observer and journeyman.
Dodger is actualy a very small role. his big stuff coems in the space between consider ytourself and Be back Soon. in aqct II Dodger only has 6 lines.
Nancy,Bumble,Brownlow,Sikes, and Corney all arw larger and more interesting roles than Dodger.

Yeah, I've always thought Fagin the lead. Both times I saw it Fagin and Oliver shared the final bow.

Fagin is in NO WAY a supporting role. Like Salome said, if played properly, he could steal the show.

I never EVER realised that ^ so thanks!

when we preformed it we were all in agreement the musical should be called "Fagin" not oliver because olivers role seemed minor in comparison despite it being about him. I think it also depends on the strength of the actor playing him though. When we preformed it we had a VERY strong actor playing the role and he basicly stole the show.

I agree with all of the above responses--Fagin is most certainly the lead role. He has more singing, more lines, more stagetime, etc than any of the other characters. He is also involved with almost all of the action of the show, and as Salome said, his relationship with Oliver is one of the central themes of the show. I'm glad you won this argument; it sounds like your challenger doesn't know the show very well.

Oliver doesn't actually have that many lines! And compared with Fagins thousands of lines he looks like a chorus member! I'd say mr. Bumble is quite a big part too as he is in alot and a few amont of lines!
On the oliver case (to one of the videos) It is a picture of Fagin and Nancy - Oliver is nowhere to be seen! Seems kinda strange with the little Oliver and there is NO Oliver! This is also the same as the book! Fagin & Nancy...No Oliver!

also, on the inside of the OBC cd case, there's a picture of a sign for the production of oliver
fagin and nancy are the biggest at the top
next is the title and author
then there's mr.bumble, mrs.corney, mr.browlow, and dr.grimwig
next is bill sikes, boxed in
then theres mrs and mr sowerberry, and then oliver and then doger.
this confused me for awhile and then after i learned the story i realized oliver isnt really the main character--in that the main focus of the story isnt about olivers life but about how his life came to affect all these others.
fagin is definately the lead

when I brought this up in drama class, my teacher and the other five students and i had a deep discusion. At first I presaused my friends that Fagin is in fact the lead, but then my teacher made them believe it was once again Oliver. She said it is beacuse the charecter with the most lines isn't nessary the main charecter. Oliver is the main charecter because the show is about how Oliver affected others. However, people care about Fagin more than any one else. The show ends with Fagin, he is what people remember most, and he is just plain cool. I still believe Fagin is the lead for these reasons and also Act II is all because of Fagin. Oliver could just stay with Mr. B and that is that, but since Fagin made Bill make Nancy get Oliver back, the plot progressed. Since Fagin made Nancy realize how he made her life horrible, and how he would do the same to Oliver, she brought him back. He helps Bill escape at the end, and once again, the show ends with Fagin, and not Oliver.
