Ensemble?I have a GYPSY audition coming up and I'm almost guaranteed at least an Ensemble part. Well, I'm too young to be Herbie and I'm the right age for Tulsa, but have limited dance experience. So really, Ensemble is all that's left. My questions are: 1) How large is the Ensemble, normally? and 2) What numbers do they appear in? Thanks in advance!

The male ensembles are the Newsboys and the Farmboys. However, there are plenty of very small male roles. (Pop, Cigar, Uncle Jocko, etc.) And since you have limited dance experience you may end up with one of the minor characters.

So you're saying I may not even get in the Ensemble? Is there much dancing required for the Newsboys/Farmboys?

The Newsboys are all young boys (around 10 years), so if you're the right age for Tulsa, you would fall in the "Farmboy" category. They are featured in a large production number in Act I -- Dainty June and Her Farmboys / Broadway Number, as well as in another scene/song in Act I.
And yes, they all have to sing and dance. However, how well they have to dance is completely up to the director and choreographer (not to mention what your pool of young male dancing talent is in this particular theatre). If you have a clever choreographer, he/she will be able to make a group of "singers who move" look like a true song-and-dance chorus.

It's the scene in the hotel room (actually a really funny scene), and the song is Mr. Goldstone. It's mostly sung by Mama Rose, but the Farmboys sing a little of it.

Pretty much, yeah. There are the Hollywood Blondes, which are only in one (short) number, and sometimes show up as showgirls during the big strip tease at the end. That's the closest thing to a female chorus that Gypsy has.

I don't get then why my high school is doing Gypsy then...*sigh*...I mean, it's an amazing show, but there's so much female talent!
