embellishing an audition song?

Question: I am new to auditioning for musicals and I was wondering...
Do directors traditionally expect you to just sing your audition piece exactly how it's written on the page- or do they appreciate people adding little embellishments? (note: I already know it would be inappropriate to channel Beyonce while singing No One Is Alone from Into The Woods)
I'm interested to hear your opinions!

It depends on how it is "embellished", but usually it is frowned upon.

The typical way people embellish songs is to take the last note up higher than is originally written. MANY casting directors hate it when people do this because that's not the original intent of the composer, and oftentimes, it is just added to "show off the money note" instead of having any real dramatic intent.

So I guess I would say to KISS...which means "Keep it Simple, Stupid!" LOL! (I was told this phrase by an old drama teacher and it has proved to be very useful! LOL!)

As long as it still sounds the same... I'm sure you'll be fine.

If you go in with "If I Were A Rich Man" from Fiddler on the Roof, and it comes out like "Rich Girl" by Gwen Stefani... or worse yet "Whacha Waitin' For", you have failed.
