Elsa never gets enough credit! lol

I played Elsa Shrader in The Sound of Music a couple of years ago and she never gets enough credit. It is actually a really fun part, at first I was really mad because I wanted to be Maria, but Elsa is fun, she's the bad guy but not too bad, ya know, plus her costumes rock!!! And in the play (unlike the movie) she has two songs! Its really fun, just thought you might want to know this little tad-bit.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm planning to audition for a production of SOM in a few months, and Elsa is the role I really want to play. She totally rocks!

I get really ticked off when productions cut her songs to make the show "more like the movie". Evil or Very Mad

I know... she has all the best songs, I wasn't her but I did want her part

A production of SOM should NEVER cut Elsa's songs! They are the best in the show and also make the show a little different from the movie.

Elsa's songs make the show A LOT less sugar-coated because they do tend to deal with the political climate and her stance on the Nazis invading Austria...

Her songs really help the audience understand why the relationship between the Captain and Elsa doesn't work out...

(And who else in the show gets to SUSTAIN a high B natural???? HUH?!)

TAKE THAT, MARIA!!!!

(Of course, I'm sorta dissing myself because I've played Maria twice! LOL!) Wink

What fun to have found this forum! Smile

This is my first post on Musicals.net. I just finished a production of The Sound of Music as Elsa, and i have to say it's some of the most fun i have ever had on stage! It was also great to return to my 'roots' of musical theater after having sung opera and classical music for the last ten years! So the 'theater bug' has bitten me again and i'll be crossing-over a lot more often in the near future!

I think audiences do appreciate Elsa, after all where would the show be without its femme-fatale antagonist? Wink Every night i came out for curtain calls in my gorgeous ruby red satin party gown and got tons of applause. I loved playing the part and evidently that joy rubbed off! Dancing

It's good to be here! I miss the show (our last performance was Sunday Crying or Very sad ) and it's nice to have a place to congregate with other SoM veterans! Smile
Salome

Elsa is the only role in the show I'd ever want to play.

and Her duets with Max as said before of the best things in the show.

Baroness :)

I wanted Maria too, but once I read for Elsa I was in love. I love the character; I play her with a slight British accent. She's beautiful and sneaky, but she has a real deepness within her. Our show is this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and I plan on playing her as a real SHOW-STEALERRR Smile

I wouldn't say Elsa is a 'bad guy'; it's just that a good audience would root for Maria and Captain to get together, and Elsa stands in the way of that. It's kinda like how Eartha Kitt summed up Yzma: "She's not evil evil; she just does naughty things".

Also, why didn't Elsa sing in the movie? If Elenor Porter couldn't sing, they could've just dubbed her. After all, they didn't seem to have a problem dubbing Christopher Plummer!

Monsieur D'Arque

I work with a repertory company run entirely by actors or former actors. Our Max and Elsa were a familiar husband and wife team who usually served as the director (Max) and choreographer (Elsa). Ironically, Max is a high tenor, and Elsa is a rather low, smoky alto, so they traded vocal parts, leading to a Max who sang and sustained high Cs a lot in the show. The audience loved it.

Here I never even knew the baroness had any songs! (I've only seen the movie of course)
From a certain perspective it makes sense to cut them - music and singing are part of the bond linking Maria to the Von Trapps - having the baroness sing would interfere with that
Salome

only problem is those 2 songs along with edleweiss are the only 3 exceptional songs in the show.
