elphie vocal range

whats elphaba's vocal range?
Luc

Why?
Bshaffer22

Pretty sure it's a belted F in Defying Gravity to a LOW E in Im Not That Girl. I dont know any songs that she goes higher than that.

MIND YOU that this is in the wicked vocal book anbd the original cast recording with Idina
Da_Dark_Dude

low e - high f (more than 2 octaves), however in defying gravity most performers go to Gb, and shoshana bean went to Ab on her last performance - good luck!

Where does the Gb fit in?
Da_Dark_Dude

on the 2nd bring me down, and then sometimes on the last note, a lot of elphies i have seen, do runs that go to Gb on these segments. Idina however, doesnt.

shoshana bean took it to Ab on her very last performance on the "look to the western skies" -

she also hits a number of Gb's.

I did NOT like that version at all.

A commenter hit the nail on the head saying she turned it into a Diva Anthem.

it got painfully raspy and gritty at times.. and I wish there was a closer video of this.. because her face while doing that COULD NOT be pretty.. and I think I'd find it very comical..

But honestly.. it sounded like she was hurting herself.. and That's one of the reasons I've come to dislike Wicked. I don't want theatre to shift to CONSTANT belting above the staff and ruining voices... it's just not healthy.
Luc

For some of the video, she actually wasn't even singing. I'm not saying "oh that's not belting that's screaming" but she was just yelling. Not for all of it, but for some. It was kind of sad.
Da_Dark_Dude

completely agree.... but u gotta love her lol
Timmy_Wishes he was Quast

*folds arms across chest* Well i liked it....it was different.

Hey, guys, dont judge her by the standard of that video. I was really supprised and pretty horrified when I heard that, I've heard/seen other vids of Sho, and I can tell you now that that was the worst performance I have ever heard from her- and it pains me that it was her last.
There is a reason why she is one of my two favorites, and thats because she normally has such a strong and powerful voice. What you heard there was not the standard she normally gives, far below, trust me.
I heard something about her being ill or sick or something at the time. I'm quite inclined to believe that. However, I'm not going to disregard nerves or being emotional, or that she has been working too hard receintly. It did sound like she was having trouble with her voice.

What I can tell you is that that is not a performance she would give normally. And I am quite supprised that your link has yet to be removed, Steve. The Mods are usually quite quick with type of thing.
music is my life!!!

she goes down to a low e in defying gravity, too (in the piano/vocal selections book)

Yeah but they do a weird transposition in that book that isn't in the show. I think it's a low Gb or F in the original score?
music is my life!!!

i'm not sure...

the vocal selections is the only one that me and my mates can get hold of...
hang on that'd mean that she Elphaba goes up a few notes higher in the song - more like a belted high g...

sorry!

i do WAY too much music!

...

but i'll still carry on Wink
Da_Dark_Dude

no it is definately not g anyway, the highest written note in defying gravity is f and it occurs twice. i havnt heard about a transposition in the book? hmmmmm wierd
katethegreat

The book fits with the OBCR if I play along...and I don't play on an out of tune piano (just a crappy old keyboard - the only thing going for it is that it never goes out of tune), so I'm pretty sure the top note is F - I can't imagine they'd completely change the score just for the OBCR and book?
happyguava

The highest note is F but the lowest note is not E. In the show. It is in the vocal selections. Hmmm - my book goes into E major when it goes "unlimited..." (in the original score it's in Gb - so Gb is the lowest note for Elphie in DG) and then the next chorus is in B major (it's in Db in the score) and then it goes back into Db for "so if you care to find me" etc etc. Did that make sense?
music is my life!!!

weird...
i mean, in the transposed version (begins in D flat major) she goes from low e to a belted high f...

i'm confused Confused

it is a weird transposition - and it's in a hard(-ish) key to play and sing in

Where does the Gb fit in?

*snort* Gb is one note above F (as in, ABCDEFG... is that familiar?)

What you have to realize, is that yes, sho does not overriff like that normally, this is her "i'm leaving this part forever" singing. She did the same in her last broadway performance too. She's only singing like that because she wanted to give her best, craziest performance before she left. In fact, many Elphies give thier last Defying Gravities everything they have, but none as much as Sho, I think. Personally, I love the overriffing of the songs, but whatever floats youe boat I guess Very Happy
SapphireNight

I just didnt like the way her voice sounded there. It sounded a bit tired, I dont know, but the video quality doesnt help. I love Sho's riffing, but I just think I've heard better from her, it wasnt her usual standard.
