Elphaba's best song

Don't get me wrong, Defying Gravity is an okay song, but I think it's greatly overrated. Everybody I know who has seen the show bases their whole opinion on the show and whoever portrays Elphaba on Defying Gravity and ONLY Defying Gravity. How did this song become so popular that the whole show is ruined if it's not fantastic? On the soundtrack, The Wizard And I is clearly the best song in the whole show that is sung by Elphaba. I'll gladly take an "I Want..." song over a whiny power ballad any day.

I personally like No Good Deed.
music is my life!!!

i love no good deed, too! Esp the start when she's casting the spell and she's like "i don't even know what i'm reading!"!

Very Happy

i like all of Elphie's songs but i agree with apples2for10 in saying that the wiz and i is the best!

I think the reason DG is so publicized (as compared to other, wonderful songs!) is because this was the song that created the concept of the musical WICKED. I read an article with Schwartz who said when he read the book, this song was immediately formulated and the rest of the show was created as a result of this number....

I personally like "Wizard & I" and "No Good Deed."

I love no good deed. It's always been my favorite song, defying gravity is great but it gets old after awhile

Agreed. When Wicked first came out, Defying Gravity seemed to be this amazing song, and I fell in love with it and even sang it in public places. But when I noticed No Good Deed, I realized I liked it not just because it had less hype, but because it was this turn in character and a big showstopper IMO.
Da_Dark_Dude

i like em all. but i love defying gravity (sorry guys) i just think its fantastic. ngd is pretty amazing too though, but the "so if u care 2 find me! look 2 the western skies!" just makes my hair stand up

I'm not that girl gets my vote. It's so gentle and I find it quite heart rending.

When I first started looking into Wicked, I didnt really like DG very much, it brought my impression of the musical down. However when I discovered NGD, I was captivated.
I love IMTG, and receintly my impression of TWAI has been improved, but for me, NGD is really the highlight. Also, in a similar way to DG, it captures the musical. In this point in time, Elphaba is mentally breaking down and succuming to the Wicked Witch of the West.
Baker

Ok, is it really necessary to use abbreviations? Defying Gravity takes about .00001 seconds longer to type than DG. And I actually had to stop to figure out what TWAI was.

Anyway.

The Wizard and I and No Good Deed are what make Elphaba. Very few Elphabas can effectively pull off both songs. Stephanie J. Block, for instance, has a killer No Good Deed, but she has a very dark quality to her voice which, although I like it, doesn't work at all for The Wizard and I. On the other hand, virtually every Elphaba can rock out on Defying Gravity and most can pull off I'm Not That Girl. The only Elphabas who I've heard so far who can effectively pull off both The Wizard and I and No Good Deed are Eden Espinosa, Shoshana Bean, Idina Menzel, and Kerry Ellis. So The Wizard and I and No Good Deed together get my vote.

Just as I song, though, without looking into it, it's The Wizard and I. I just really like that song. =P
Eponine93

I'm going to go with the majority and vote for No Good Deed and the Wizard and I. However, I also am a huge fan of Elphaba's parts in "As Long As You're Mine" and "Wonderful." Whenever Idina Menzel sings them, it comes out so breezy and well... wonderful.
music is my life!!!

i also love elphie's part in something bad, but i really don't like that song. my fave bit = (harmonised) "nothing all that bad". esp in OBC

I like No Good Deed. I think it's much more powerful than Defying Gravity. I just think Defying Gravity is so overrated due to it being the turning point of Elphaba and the ending of act 1. Plus she goes up in the air Smile that parts pretty cool. I went to see it in London with Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Defying Gravity, to me was one of those songs that just makes you all spine tingly. So i think they may be the reasons why. It's much better live. Oh I liked For Good aswell, that made me cry Embarassed. Oh and no one ever says anything about the Finale! I love that! It is only about 1 minute long but still very good in my opinion!
music is my life!!!

i can't listen to for good - every single time i hear it (or sing it) it makes me cry!

yes indeedy. love the "FIEEEEEEYYYYYYYRRRRROOOO" its amazing. esp eden espinosa's version.

Still love defying gravity most though Wink
Mistress

Wow. It's so hard for me to choose! I love every single song from the show, I find it so hard to pick a favourite!

I love "Defying Gravity" for the spectacle (who wouldn't enjoy seeing a woman belting out a song 30 feet in the air?)

I love "I'm Not That Girl" because it's a beautiful, tragic song, that captures romantic rejection and can be understand by teeneagers and older women alike, I think.

I love "No Good Deed" because it's so powerful and tragic. It's like "I'm Not That Girl", but angrier, almost like a madness scene. I'm sort of imagining Lady Macbeth's madness done to music (I'm probably way off here, but I's what I'm picturing right now). It's especially heart-wrenching when done with a tone of emotion, like when Eden Espinoza or Shoshana Bean, or Stephanie J Block all do it.

I like "The Wizard and I" for it's bouncy tune and optimistic lyrics, and powerful vocals (Whereas DG is Idna's weaskest song, this one is one of her strongest...She sounds amazing singing it).

I especially love the duets, though. "What is This Feeling" is so halirous, and if you have an especially good Elphaba/Galinda team (*cough* Julia Murney and Kendra Kassebaum *cough*), you could honeslty laugh yourself to death.

I think my favouriite song, though, along with "Defying Gravity", is "As Long As You're Mine". It's so beautiful and romantic, but not really a cheesy love ballad (At least I don't think it is!). It's an honest love song expressing two lovers' deication to each other through the hardest of times. And it has a touch of sexuality (i.e. "I'll wake up my body, and make up for lost time...") to make it sensual and romantic, but nowhere near raunchy, like so many songs today (Though I admit, I think things have been getting a little better in mainstream music lately, with regards to romantic songs). And once again, the better the performers are, the better the song ends up being (once again, kudos to Murney, this time for her unabashed ass-grabbing...btw does anyone know if she made a habit of grabbing Sabestian Arcelus' ass, or just did it once or twice?...I've only seen one clip of her doing it, but's the only clip of her ALAYM available.)

If I ever marry, I think "As Long As You're Mine" will be a leading contender on my list of possible wedding songs.

Anyway, I think this post has gotten long enough, I apologuize for my endless babble.

Totally agree, only I'll add that the most powerful thing about it is because they both know that their time together is short, and it's not going to last forever. I know from experience how hard it is to hold on to something when really its time in your life is over.
theatre_grl

i like no good deed b/c it is so powerful and, IMO, harder to perform than defying gravity.
also defying gravity annoys me now b/c of all the hype and so many untalented young fangirls belting it everywhere they go (sorry those of you who do sing this well, but the overwheming majority cant)
la tua cantante

ok defying gravity is amazing, i love it with all my heart but i like no good deed a huge deal too, i mean it s so strong and the belts she does there and i don t know why i just love the phrase no good deed goes unpunished
it s quite bitter, but i like it
LucyVanPelt

I would have to say my favorite song is "Not that Girl". But maybe it's because I can sing it really well, and I'm using it for an audition....hmmmm.... Smile although, I do love all of Elphaba's songs!
NannaBess

fave song

Definitely The Wizard and I for me. It shows off Idina's ability to hold the longer notes and it's the most lyrical piece for me. Personally, I can't stop singing it!

I totally agree but Defying Gravity (the ending) encapsulates? (is that a word) the whole audience and the elphaba's mentioned above all make Defying Gravity special especially Idina and Kerry but I personally like all of Elphaba's songs!
Elphaba_Gelphie_Glinda

I have to say No Good Deed is my favourite song.... not only just from Elphaba but in the show.

This song for me is the most powerful part in the show. It's dark and epic and beautiful all at once and it has a more gothic feel to it. It related to me at one point as well (minus of course the names and chant)

I guess what really draws me into this song is it's darkness. I've always been attracted to darker songs (hence my Evanescence obsession) and so therefore I was automatically attracted to this song.

Well, crap. I guess this thread makes me stupidly predictable. But Defying Gravity was my favorite, although No Good Deed and I'm Not That Girl aren't far behind.

I guess it was because of the set of pipes Kerry Ellis has on her. She can really belt, so that song is perfect for her. Of course, the dramatic effects help! I've been to a good number of musicals -- some ok some fantastic -- and I've never seen a more buzzing intermission. Everyone was talking about Kerry Ellis.

"I'm Not That Girl" is my favorite Elphie song
DanceTenLooksThree

Im Not That Girl, hands down.
Melindaisy

I think her best song, dramatically and as far as being vocally challenging is "No Good Deed"... the actress playing the role can really let loose on that one.
I find that the pathos of "I'm Not That Girl" is really touching and gives you great insight to the inner core of the character.
