Not as such - Matthew Bourne avoids simply refering to it as a ballet; rather, as a piece of dance theatre. Of course there are moments which evidently draw on formal balletic knowledge, but a great deal of it is choreographed with a wonderful musical-theatre sensibility. It is extremely good theatre - and I'm among the first to admit I don't go out of my way to see classical ballet. I'd be greatly suprised if anyone with the slightest interest in musicals didn't fall in love with this. |

It's awesome and shouldn't be judged before you've seen it.
Have a look at the videos on the website. |

did it for my a levelsi had to study matthew bourne and me and my friends saw it twice and had a dance workshop with 2 of the dancers it was amazing and we got the dancers autograph. i personally think that it should be made into a musical. danny elfmans score lends it self to having lyrics with it.Mathew Bourne is a legend |

Wow. I read this and my first thought was that this was the stupidest idea I've ever heard. I mean-just think about it- Edward Scissorhands BALLET? But then I looked at some video clips and it actually looks REALLY good! I want to see it now!

I've seen this last February. It is a really good dance show, but it's nothing on his other works, The Nutcracker was my favourite piece and i've seen his Swan Lake too which is just breath taking. The Car Man too, my god ..Wow is all i can say. It just seemed like a musical without words to me, but still Matthew Bourne is a amazing Choreographer and i would DEFINATELY recommed seeing this show! The guy dancing Edward must have a really hard time dancing with those huge scissors, if i remember rightly though the only big dancing he really does is in a dream sequence when he doesn't wear them. I love the topiary scene, the costumes are amazing.

I'm REALLY hoping that at some point they are able to release it on DVD. I can't see it because of rights issues. It is AWESOME and deserves a much wider audience.

Moosie, dear, we are going to be having a serious talk about this when we finally brave the mad Christmas mall rush together I'm really biased about it and I know I am, because I've never seen clips and actually turned off the movie because I was falling asleep the one time I attempted to watch it, but.... come on, people! I think its a terrible idea and I'm amazed they managed to do a good job with it. Question though: Was it really that good or did you guys all expect it to be horrible so it SEEMED good compared to your expectations? I'm a very close-minded person. I can't believe 1. that its a ballet, and 2. people actually paid money to see it. |

I think that last but one sentence says it all, personally. A few points, though... Firstly, the ballet was concieved and choreographed by Matthew Bourne - I therefore went to see it with nothing but the highest expectations. I was not disappointed. Secondly, it's a damn brilliant idea. Danny Elfman's score for the film even features titles such as 'Ballet Suburbia' and 'The Ice Dance'. I think it was crying out to be done. Thirdly, I would point out that this was concieved as a piece in itself, as opposed to a mindless transference from screen to stage. Therefore, the plot has adapted itself accordingly, and fits beautifully. It constitutes one of only three occasions that I've been seriously touched by a piece of theatre (the others being Sunday in the Park with George, and Les Miserables). Before you condemn it as a terrible idea (or is it too late?) go and look at the website for the production - it features a few video clips plus a gallery. It's a beautiful piece of work. |
