Dysfunctional family!Dear Sweeney Todd Fans,
SPOILER ALERT!
I think that one of the most interesting aspects of the Sweeney Todd movie will be the fact that Sweeney, Lovett, and Toby will be presented as being a barely-held-together, slightly dysfunctional (He's a murderer, she's the accomplice, and the poor kid is in the dark) "family" of sorts.
That arrangement will be interesting, because I have never really considered the extent of Todd's relationship to Toby.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Oh, damn it all. I did have an idea, but I'm not sure what it was. It had something to do with the whole "dysfunctional family" thing.

Lovett isnt the accomplice she is the instigator of the whole plot. Sweeney doesnt realized she is manipulating him.

She's both an instigator and accomplice.

I think we're talking about the movie since the family element isn't really present in the play, and in the movie, it's pretty clear Mrs. Lovett didn't really plot it all out.

It really depends on the actress I think; there's the possibility of bringing this element out in the show but the character isn't always taken that way.

I like that plot line... it makes it me wonder though...
if todd hadn't thrown mrs. lovett into the oven.. and they'd gotten married and all...entirely different ending eh? wait that would be the disney version of sweeney todd....ewwwwwwwwww the disney version...(gags)..

Doesn't it seem like there would have been a bit of suspicion if a high-ranking judge and his bodyguard just vanished without a trace? I don't think Sweeney and Lovett would have made it much longer without a major shift in operating style even if they'd stayed alive through that night.

O my gosh--interesting idea!
The Disney version of Sweeney Todd:
-All the music is changed to be melodious and cheerful. No factory whistle.
-After Judge Turpin sends Barker off, he tries to get Lucy to marry him; anything else is barely implied.
-Lucy runs away. (and doesn't appear again at all)
-When Pirelli confronts Sweeney, Sweeney knocks him unconsious and they send him away on a random cargo ship (for which he is very remorseful)
-Judge's Johanna is cut
-Lovett rescues Toby and adopts him out of the kindness of her heart
-Sweeney simply cuts people enough that they have to wear ugly, uncomfortable bandages
-Sweeney whistles all the time because he's in a merry mood!
-Lovett's business gets better because she reads lots of cook books, but she steals the meat (which is very naughty, children)
-Anthony locks Fogg up when he rescues Johanna (more like in the movie, but without the idea that he'll be ripped apart by the blondes)
-The Judge is sent to jail because it's found out that he makes false charges (and justice is always carried out, children)
-Sweeney forgives Turpin, knowing that justice is served, Lovett repents and anonymously pays back the butcher she's been stealing from and they get married and live with Toby in a sweet little cottage by the sea.
-They all live happily ever after (and are at peace with the world)
-Johanna is the next disney princess (she has even less character than the movie's Johanna, and none of the gloom)
-The tagline is "Learn forgiveness and try to forget"
so aweful and so funny.
(If anyone associated with Disney is reading this, don't get any ideas)

We could have an added scene where Sweeney offers to give Anthony a shave and his hand slips while shaving .

^tempting, cept our Antony is not manly enough to need a shave, so it'd lose credibility
