Which version? No matter, I suppose - neither is Chita. The 1962 version has Faith Dane in her only film role as Mazeppa and the 1993 version has Linda Hart who was recently the original Velma Von Tussle in the musical, Hairspray.

Yes it stars 'Bette Midler' as rose, and sticks closer to the stage version than the 1962 one did.

I've seen the '93 version, and I think it's AMAZING (despite what many people on this forum will tell you). Bette Midler is wonderful as Mama Rose, and the supporting cast is also excellent. Plus, it's really close to the stage version (I haven't seen it on stage, but I've heard that the script is almost identical to the '93 TV version). Definitely the one to get if you've never seen the show live and are trying to get acquainted with it.
Salome

You can certainly watch the 93 version but midler is terrible she is mess.overacting, yelling..peaking wya too early.

she is probably the worst Mama Rose I ever saw.

the original film is perfetly cast..Roz Russell is a very humman Rose making her unlikabel but sympatetic.

Karl Malden is so perfect as Herbie..his break up scene always brings me to tears.

and Natalie Wood does a wonderful transformation as Louise.

btw..thats also Ann Jillian as June.

in the 93 version Peter Reigert is a good Herbie but never reaches Malden's level.

and Cynthia Gibb is a wondeful Louise. but midler destroys the films balance greatly.

Honestly, I used to love the Midler version. Once one has seen the original Roz film though, Midler pales in comparison.

In addition to what Salome said, I kind of dislike the look and feel of the film as a whole. It's so...Tacky looking.
