Dry Before AuditionsSo here I am gettting ready for another audition tonight, and it never fails—my throat is dry as can be.
I don't get how this only happens before auditions! I'm eating all the right foods today, keeping hydrated, got lots of sleep last night, etc. and it just closes up.
I know the nerves can play a part in this, but I swear, I don't even feel nervous today.
Can anyone offer any reasoning why this happens, without fail, before every single audition, and any remedies to combat it?

You're right it is nerves, eventhough you may not feel nervous it's the antipation of waiting I think

Nerves are probably the main source so it might be helpful to figure out your own pre-audition relaxation process (if you don't already have one). As for remedies, I don't know anything about throats closing up, but for dryness, there are homeopathic herbs that I take for really dry throat that help a lot (even if a little bit through placebo effect). I have to check the name, but they help me when water isn't enough, and you don't take them everyday, you can take them only when you have dry throat.
Nerves are most likely the biggest problem though, so work on those!

Chew gum. You wouldn't believe how many opera singers do this...Some of them really don't leave home without it.
Chew it and right before you go into the audition, spit it out into a kleenex or something. Not only does it help you with saliva, but it also helps relax your jaw...

Thanks guys! I think I probably was a little nervous, even though I wasn't concious of it. I think I have a pretty good relaxation process, but it somehow creeps up on me anyway. And, I'm not so sure about the alcohol...lol! But Jazzy, I will definitely try the gum suggestion; it makes sense to me!
