DREAMGIRLSChristmas Day! I'm freaking out.I heard Jennifer Hudson is awesome. |
||||
| sadie1208 |
I'm really excited about the movie.
| Eponine93 |
Why do we only have a forum here about it because the movie is coming out next week?
Does anyone feel like its going to be the next "hit" musical (like RENT) Because, personally, I feel a lot of other shows would be more successful movies. *shrugs* At least I can feel cool for seeing Dreamgirls (a very bad outdoor theatre production) before most people had even heard of the movie. |

The owner added it for you guys, nice lady that she is. |

Like what shows? I can think of a ton of musicals that might be popular amongst theatre people only but flop at the box office like Rent did because it doesn't transcend that well to non theatre people. Dreamgirls actually isn't that awful of a musical and the storyline might actually interest people other then the musical theatre crowd, if the cast alone won't draw people to it. Why should it make you feel cool because you saw it before it was a movie? That's silly. Why does it matter what someone saw first as long as they at least acknowledge the original source (like some of the new Rent fans only know the movie and know nothing about the broadway show). |
||||
| Eponine93 |
I have a feeling everyone is going to be like "OMG Dreamgirls!" and singing all the music everywhere, at least at my school. It was like that with Rent. I got to feel smug for knowing the music before they did.
Thats the word I was looking for. Smug. I'm an obnoxious, self-obsessed middle schooler who is known as the school theatre geek. I like feeling smug about knowing a thing or two about musicals since it so rarely happens that anyone cares at my school. |

i don't care what anyone says..... I LOVE DREAMGIRLS...... and I'm extra excited.

Since Beyonce is it in, you're probably right about people jumping on the Dreamgirls band wagon and not even knowing anything about the actual stage musical. |

I found out that Beyonce is pissed off because Jennifer Hudson is better than her. I downloaded "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going", Jennifer Hudson's song and it is excellent. I cannot wait to see this film. A big group of my theatre and choir friends are going. YEAH!

I Can't WaitI bought the soundtrack and it sounds great! I can't wait for it to come out. It supposed to be even better than Chicago. Now all they need is to do Wicked. |
||||
| Jenem |
lol; who's your source? People magazine?! I think that's just a bunch of hoopla; what the ef does she care about Jennifer Hudson? She's Beyonce for Pete's sake- I highly doubt she feels threatened, however wonderful Jennifer is in the film. |

Re: I Can't Wait
Or not. Wicked would lose a lot of what makes it popular (excuse the pun) in the transition from stage to screen (a.k.a. the almighty SPECTACLE). It be much better to stay where it is. As for Dreamgirls, I am excited to see it. Like Chicago before the movie came out, I know of it and I know a few songs from it but that's about it. A few friends and I are planning on seeing it Christmas Day. |

http://www.beyonce-photos.com/News/beyonce-im-already-a-a243.html Read this. Just out of curiousity, who did you "find out" from? And who's to say who is better than who? It's all a matter of opinion. Jennifer Hudson is getting rave reviews, I mean, the character of Effie, and the song "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" are making her a star. I "heard" the same thing about Beyonce, from a friend who was like, "I read it in Star Magazine." Come on people, do we really listen to what Star tells us? It's tabloids!!!! That's why I went looking to see if I could find anything about it and came across this article. And holy crap, why should she care? It's Beyonce!!!! People love her, she is already a star. And there are other stars in this world, and I think Jennifer Hudson will be one as well. They can share the screen. There can be more than one star! And holy crap, why do I care? I just want to see the movie! I agree with you, I heard Jennifer Hudson sing it on the soundtrack and I'm hooked. I'm really looking forward to seeing this one. |

i heard a rumor that Jennifer Holiday is mad that they over looked her to play Effie in the movie. Is this ture? Is she serious?
| MsDivaKate |
As it is with most rumours, its probably not true.
| Salome |
The only reason i want to see the film is John Lithgow's cameo and the song they wrote for him. I'm not a Dreamgirls fan.

I'm very excited about this movie. I love the music and i can't wait to see it.

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-jennifer12dec12,0,5591554.story?coll=la-home-entertainment Read this. From what I understand of this article, she's not mad that they didn't ask her to play Effie. I mean, she's too old for the role. It's more the fact that she was the original Effie, and she feels that she is not getting any acknowledgment for that. She wasn't invited to the movie premiere, and she says that the movie makers have essentially shunned her. This was the show that made Jennifer Holliday a star, and I think she wanted a little more recognition. Read the article though, it's a good read, and it explains it a lot better than I can! |

Although, Frenchie Davis seemed a little bitter about not getting the part, according to the way she talked about it here... http://www.broadway.com/gen/general.aspx?ci=541884

I can honestly say I had never heard of this musical before the movie. I just found out it was a musical when I came to this site and saw they had a forum for it. But now I want to see it since everyone keeps saying how much they like it! Unfortunately I won't be able to go on Christmas day because I'll be getting popcorn for the people who are watching it (never work at a movie theatre, it sucks!).
| Master Thespian |
Currently listening to the soundtrack. Yeah, Jennifer scorches big time on "And I'm Telling You". Didn't she sing that on Idol?
| Mimi Marquez |
I had someone come up to me once and ask me if I knew that Rent was a stage musical before it was a movie. And a lost faith in humanity.... |

I was lucky enough to get to see a preveiw screening of dreamgirls last week, and I absolutely love it.I hadn`t heard of it until a couple months ago when a friend of mine was listening to one of the songs and we all got really excited when we got preveiw tickets free.In my opinion it`s really good, and I especially liked Jennifer Hudson.She`s amazing.I also have a newfound respect for Beyonce.I didn`t think she`d be that great until I heard Listen.My friend was worried about her not having enough depth, but I really think she did great.All in all I think it was a great movie, I really do recommend that people go see that.

wow lucky you |

Now, I LOVE JEnnifer Holiay and think her performance of Effie is one of the most amazing thing ever on broadway, but i think she is suffering from career withdraw, After dreamgirls, she went downhill fast. HAd a huge rep as a raging diva with more vices then just food. I think she is amazing, but other then being the original effie what other part does she have in dreamgirls. she didnt write it. it took them 20 years to put in on screen and that relly had nothign to do with her. I think she is worried taht the one thing she had (roel of Effie) will be forgotten because SHE hasn't done anythign else. Now, Jennifer HUdson is fabulous but nothign beats Ms. Hopliday. Just go check her out ojn youtube |

I heard she was just mad because they used her recording for the Trailer and made people believe it was Jennifer Hudson. Either way i've heard Jennifer's version of it and she's AMAZING!

I just saw it and thought it was great.

I posted this in the misc forum too
I saw Dreamgirls last night. Overall, i thought it was good. Amazing? No Good yes. definitely overall, not as good as I thought it would be with all that hype. First off, Jennifer Hudson is AMAZING! There is juts no denying it. Whether it was And I'm Telling you...or a random one line her vocals were just inspiring. She was not this good on AI. She owned that part. Yes OK Jennifer Holiday owns the part too, but they can share it. I have seen a video of Holiday's Effie and they were different so it both works. Yes she deserves an award. Obviously Effie is the lead role, but I think they are putting her in supporting because she will have an easier win that way. However, I think she could win lead actress. This brings me to Anika Noni Rose. Now she should be nominated for best supporting. I absolutely loved her. She had me cracking up and what pipes she has. It was obviously the least showy or well-defined of the dreams but she was great. Now to Beyonce. First let me say, I am a huge fan. I have both her solo albums and was a huge Destiny child fan. I always thought her voice was amazing. Now she was fine in the movie. Her part did not take much to be honest. Be happy and innocent here be a bitch here. Her big number, Listen would honestly have been awesome....except Hudson completely makes you forget about it. i was impressed w/ Beyonce during Listen but when you match it Hudson, nope. When the three sang dialogue, it was pretty clear that Beyonce was the weakest singer. She would add some rolls and stuff that were way off. However, I think she made a fine Deena, which is kinda blah role. I thought Jamie Foxx was fine. Do not love the part itself. Eddie Murphy was so great. He was so funny and entertaining. An award though? Not so much. It just wasn't a meaty role at all. He may win for namesake and come back reasons, but I can think of more deserving people. I liked Danny Glover and the guy who played CC just fine. Glover was good, it was nice to see him again. I thought CC's voice was good, once again not amazing. Now the best parts for me were the opening sequence with the other 4 member girl group, who rocked it out and then of course whenever Hudson sang. The emotion in her voice wow. Now the things that kinda bothered me: I thought once the girls' careers started taking off it got slow. Hudson got to And I'm telling and I was like wow this is the half way point. But then I felt that the ending was so rushed and sloppy. Overall, I kept thinking a lot of the cuts and transitions weer so choppy. Some really bad flow. They also use news clips to show passage of time. I got the idea but they were so jerky, and did not fit with the tone/feel/style of the movie. My only other complaint is that the story takes place over many many years, the costumes and hair changed appropriately with the times, but the girls never appeared to age, especially Hudson who after being outed from the dreams, took out her weave and suddenly looked like she was 16 and living today. Then she comes back and becomes a diva and they dress her like she is 40. So that is it. Do I think it is the best of the recent movie musicals. Honestly I do not overall. Do i think it was the best movie of the year, not even close. Did I like it and was I entertained...for the most part. Would I recommend it. Well buy the CD it is so worth it just to hear the awesome music and tight harmonies. As for the movie, see it just to see Hudson if nothing else. Best performance of all the recent movie musicals. The movie just rocked when she was on screen singing or not. When she wasn't on screen you were just waiting for her. OK that is all. Thanks for reading if you got this far! |

Well unless tehy cut it from the film, Lithgow has no song and about 6 lines of dialogue that anyone oculd have said. Sorry just dont want you t get excited |
||||
| Jordan |
Yes, and you didn't use any paragraphs there, either! |

Nice review; I can't wait to see it. However, keep in mind that Deena is supposed to be a weaker singer, and the role is more internal, more introverted; Deana is not untalented, but flawed, self-concious. So....Beyonce must have done a pretty good job; based on your review. However, I haven't seen the film, so I dont know for sure, Im just taking this from what you're saying. And no, I am not a B fan; though it must appear this way from reading my posts here- lol! |

I love and dislike Beyonce. It's like marmite.
I want to see the film when it arrives in the UK early next year. Looking forward to seeing Eddie Murphy. Haven't seen him for a while - probably just me but very excited to see him on the big screen. |
||||
| Eponine93 |
Eddie Murphy is AMAZING as Jimmy. A lot of people say Jennifer Hudson is the whole movie, but it's not just her. Eddie Murphey is absolutely great as well. I've never really seen him out of roles that weren't purely comic, but he manages to be a hilarious Jimmy on stage and easily switches to a flawed, serious, Jimmy-on-herion. He's also got quite a voice. He was definitely my favorite performer in that whole movie, including Jennifer Hudson. Another question: Does <insert character name here> (not wanting to spoil it for anyone) die in the musical or just the movie? I don't remember his death when I saw the musical, and neither do people I know who saw it on Broadway. I couldn't find anything about it online, though. |
||||
| MademoiselleMusicals |
^ Brilliant!!! Can't wait in that case.
| BoundBySound |
I'm yet to see the movie but I've heard great feedback. I cant wait to see it though. My friend said she liked it better than the performance she saw of it. It may have just been the people that performed it but still, I'm excited!
| shadowdancer |
I am refering to the scenes when tehy are singing dialogue not teh Dreamgirls performances. When the girls are singing dialogue to each other you can just tell how much weaker she is. I think she is good in th emovie, especially her "Listen" but it is completely overshadowed |
||||
| shadowdancer |
It is only in th emovie that {character} dies. In hte play version after teh c haracter's interesting, pants dropping performance the character is dumped by love and by the manager and then is just gone. INteresting fact: : In early versions of the play, the character Effie died, and Jennifer Holliday originally refused to be in the show. When no suitable replacement could be found, the story was re-written, making both Effie and Deena, and not just Deena, the main characters of the story. Here is a link to a story about Florence Ballard, the woman Effie is based on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_Ballard |

That's what I thought, thanks. I like the movie's take on the events better, actually. It makes a hell of a lot more sense and really makes the movie more emotional. Also, it gives <actor name> a better chance to show his serious side. Although I do admit I was a bit surprised when he died. It was like- WHAT? THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN IN THE SHOW! |

Just saw it 2 days ago!
I thought Jennifer Hudson was AMAZING!

I kept getting chills throughout the whole movie every time musical numbers came up. Beyonce was great, I thought. I'm not an amazingly huge fan of hers, but she really pulled together a great role. She was emotional and sweet. Jennifer Hudson was, of course, stunning; and I really loved Eddie Murphy too! I'm definately buying it when it comes out on DVD!
| Bshaffer22 |
Jennifer Hudson can sing, belt, act, do anything better than Beyonce. It's just how Jamie Foxx(Curtis Taylor) said in the movie to Beyonces character. The reason I picked you is just for your body, your voice has no soul. It fits her perfectly. |
