I would personally love to see Jonathan Davis (of KoRn) as Judas and Corey Taylor (of Slipknot/Stone Sour) as Jesus. Bring back the rock singers plllllease XD

I was just thinking that I'd like to see Michael Maguire as Judas.
| Chessfan |
Hmmm.
Jesus: Steve Balsamo (he's come along way since 1996) Judas: Bono (don't know if he can act but I'd love to see him try the part) Mary Magdalene: Shirley Manson. Peter: Glen Hansard Simon: Dave Grohl Pilate: Gary Oldman Herod: David Bowie Caiaphas: Christopher Lee (heard him sing once. Not quite sure he's a bass) Annas: Danny Zolli or Michael Shaffer |

| Yakko |
Juduas: Drew Sarich
Jesus Christ: Steve Balsamo All I can think of |

Eric Kunze as Jesus. He looks like Depp but has the voice of an angel.
| Brother Marvin Hinten, S. |
We get it. You're an Eric Kunze fan. He's good, great even, but he's not the best Jesus to come down the pike.
| maggiwun |
We are all entitled to our opinion |

There will be a remake of the 70's version for 2011.
My dream cast for it : Jesus : Steve Balsamo Judas : Drew Sarich (Roger Daltrey could be good... a bit too old) Mary Mag : Karen Olivo or Rosario Dawson Pilate : Brian Stokes Mitchell Herod : Jack Black Simon : Constantine Maroulis Caiaphas : Tim Storms Annas : Richard O'brian (yes he's old, but if I remember well, in some biblical stories, Annas was Caiaphas' father) |

Steve Balsamo is a great Jesus and Drew Sarich is a great Judas...
But have you ever listened and seen Drew in the role of Jesus? He's amazing... I can't keep my tears everytime I listen his "Gethsemane"... I'm sorry for Steve, he's a real artist, but my dream cast is: JESUS: Drew Sarich JUDAS: Corey Glover/Zubin Varla MARY: Rosario Dawson SIMON: Rob Fowler PETER: Steve Balsamo PILATE: Fred Johanson HEROD: Jack Black CAIAPHAS: Vin Diesel (he has a "bad" voice...) ANNAS: Michael Shaffer |

,most of these people are unknown that are being mentioned..plus that drew sarich is a wash out.. he never created a role! he's a stringer guys!.. a fill in! a replacement. get over it!!!

In the original JCS movie there were young and unknown actors-singers.
Most of them came from Broadway stages. Not Hollywood stars. I think the remake would be the same. With 1 or 2 guest stars of the "jetset", why not... Drew Sarich played many musical roles and partecipated to 4 JCS tour in 1998, 2004, 2005 and 2008 playing the roles of Jesus and Judas. He knows the show, he knows the Jesus role and - surely - he created his Jesus. |

if there is a new film i'd prefer seeing some name actor/sings like Sting or David Bowie as Pilate ans Nathan Lane as Herod..etc..etc
| Brother Marvin Hinten, S. |
I can see David Bowie as Pilate, if only because his non-sung performance of the same role in "Last Temptation" was great. Nathan Lane, however, is an example of the kind of Herod that I think is over-played.
"King Herod's Song" is often played as silly, comic relief in most productions, and inexplicably making Herod gay! (Apparently, for some folks, Herod's decadence in the Bible is easily expressed by homosexuality because we all know how decadent those gays are! <g>) But the truth is that there is far more substance in this material than is usually apparent. For this great philosopher and political leader to be treated so disrespectfully, so grotesquely should be deeply upsetting, particularly with the extra baggage of two thousands years of Christian culture we all have. "King Herod's Song" should be ridiculous, yes, but he should also be scary, dangerous, disturbing. Nathan Lane would be scary, dangerous, and disturbing, but for all the wrong reasons. |

see i disagree..i like the broad over the top herod's.
| jarrod001 |
THAT IS THE MOST PERFECT THING I HAVE EVER HEARD. |
||||
| Brother Marvin Hinten, S. |
Well, let's look at that. Why do you like the broad over the top Herods? |
||||
| MunkustrapQC |
I didn't like his Jesus... seriously... He's an amazing Judas... in my opinion the best alongside Carl Anderson. I just don't like him as Jesus
I saw Corey Glover live, and didn't like him that much.. He was okay.. Varla is great! |
||||
| Monsieur D'Arque |
I think Alice Cooper and Rik Mayall hit a nice line between "camp fairy over-the-top Herod" and "just seriously nasty Herod."
Rik's spoiled-brat with a fortune Herod, complete with neon signs (the neon mouth being a subtle reference to the original King Herod staging, in which he came out of a giant mouth to make his entrance) and dancing Blues Brothers is effectively humorous, bratty, annoying, but ultimately intimidating. Cooper's Herod is arguably just Alice Cooper's Seventies persona come back- the sleazy-but-sophisticated song-and-dance douchebag. |

| GRU |
In my opinion, "King Herod song" has been created to give a funny, grotesque and crazy moment. And it purposes Herod like a mad, sneaky and annoying man.
If we extrapolate the song from the show, it seems just like a strange swing song. Inside the opera, it has the power to break the solemnity of the drama and create a light and funny- but disturbing and mad - moment. And I think Joshua Mostel's Herod (1973 original movie) was perfect. |

My ideal Herod is someone like this guy--probably drunk, a borderline nut job, someone who's asking too many questions for their own good and going out of their way to be an ass, and dangerous. And yet there's funniness in it too.
| Mungojerrie_rt |
I have to say I didn't like that at all. |
||||
| Brother Marvin Hinten, S. |
That's the point, though. While it does serve as a form of silly comic relief, you're not SUPPOSED to like Herod's scene. Think of the psychological weight on the audience of his taunting of Christ--there is far more substance in this material than is usually apparent. For this great philosopher and political leader to be treated so disrespectfully, so grotesquely, should be deeply upsetting, particularly with the extra baggage of two thousand years of Christian culture we all have.
| Monsieur D'Arque |
The wrong Herod is demonized, right? Herod I or whatever, the one who went balls-deep trying to kill baby Jesus was the bad one, and then the later one was just a guy who said "Not my problem" and passed on the Christ issue.
| Salome |
the herod from JCS is the one that killed john the baptist in lust for his step daughter salome. |
||||
| Brother Marvin Hinten, S. |
If you buy the Biblical account. Actual historians of the time period, such as Josephus, say John was killed for much the same reason Jesus is killed in the show--namely, he was perceived to be rallying the people to revolution and needed to be removed from the situation. In fact, the Jewish people at the time who seemed to be searching eternally for omens believed that Herod Antipas' defeat at the hands of a Nabatean war lord was God's punishment for John's death.

The only character/actor that I would really really love to see is Billy Corgan as Annas. Just listen to any Smashing Pumpkins song and tell me his shrill nasally voice wouldn't be perfect for Annas. Plus he looks very similar to the 2000 version Annas as he has a shaved head.
It just seems perfect to me. |
||||
| mantarnia |
I fully agree with you. It is the way the part works best, considering the style that the song is written in. |
||||

I'll probably get crap for this because I'm seventeen and it'll sound fangirl-esque, but Adam Pascal as Jesus would be fantastic.
| Borb |
Jesus- Ted Neeley (Going old school, even though it will never happen)
Judas- Drew Sarich Mary- Not too sure on this one. Peter- Adam Pascal Pilate- Depends if he will be more of a Tenor or a Bass/Baritone Herod- Steve Carell WOOT, 100th post, yeah for me! |
||||
| Brother Marvin Hinten, S. |
See, my idea of a remake changes with time, as it should for all, based on what I'm hearing in people who could very well sing the hell out of the roles, or in the case of Herod, make it really funny while at the same time conveying a dangerous madman. In other words, the 2006 benefit cast:
Jesus of Nazareth.........Ted Neeley Judas Iscariot.........Ben Vereen Mary Magdalene.........Yvonne Elliman Pontius Pilate.........Barry Dennen King Herod.........Jack Black Simon Zealotes.........Clint Holmes Caiaphas.........Christopher P. Carey Annas.........Larry Friedman Peter.........Douglas Crawford |

Jesus of Nazareth ~ Danny Zolli
Judas Iscariot ~ Chris Cornell Mary Magdalene ~ Idina Menzel Caiaphas ~ Lawson Skala Annas ~ someone along the lines of Brian Kieth and Phil Jethro Pontius Pilate ~ Steven Page or David Bowie King Herod ~ Steven Page Simon Zealotes ~ Jefferey Polk Peter ~ Geddy Lee Maid ~ Yvonne Elliman Roman Soldier ~ Barry Dennen Old Man ~ Ted Neeley Reporter #1 ~ Ben Vereen Andy. |
||||
| Brother Marvin Hinten, S. |
Idina? Really? So you want tortured pop stylings and diva wailing on IDKHTLH?
| Monsieur D'Arque |
Geddy Lee as PETER of all people? A two-line cameo in which he wouldn't even get to use his most distinctive vocal feature?
| jcstar |
Lee doesn't have the range to sing Jesus these days. Listen to the recent live versions of 2112. He doesn't scream the lyrics like he did back i9n the '70's. Then again, he may choose to drop the octive on tour.
Idina would be an interesting Mary, I think. She's the first name that popped into my head. Others I have thought of: Patti Russo Sas Jordan Melissa Ethridge Andy. |
